Wordless Wednesday - Church Renovations

This post contains affiliate links.

A major renovation project was just completed in our church sanctuary.

This is how the platform originally looked:

This is where that platform used to be. It was completely demolished and the builders started over.

Two weeks after the project began, this was the front of the sanctuary.

New platform under construction:

Platform almost complete!

This is how it looks now that the project is complete.

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • Be careful not to include spoilers!
  • Share the title and author, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR lists if they like your teasers!
She sipped slowly, allowing him to recover his composure before answering. "Cecil, as I explained, time is of the essence, and the Restoration was the first ship we could secure for the voyage. I found it is not every captain who is willing to accept three unescorted women as passengers, but also their cargo--"

10 JUNE, 1773
RIVENSHIRE, ENGLAND

In the hopes that at least one would get through, their father had sent three copies of his last letter from the West Indies; as it happened, his daughters received them all. The first arrived nine weeks after it was posted. A servant delivered the second on a silver tray, a week after they heard their father had perished. By the time the final, rather ghoulish draft came, the girls were weeks into their grief, and it was buried in a stack of condolence letters.

"I'm only glad that Mother isn't here to endure this," Verity said, handing her older sister the letter in her father's careful script. Her eyes were bloodshot, making them an eerie gold-green. Ket knew she hadn't been sleeping; she heard the floorboards creaking as Ver tiptoed downstairs each night. Their youngest sister, Selah, never left her room after retiring, but judging from her wan complexion and the dark circles ringing her own eyes, Ket wagered she tossed and turned all night too.

Here's the blurb:

In 1772 England, Lady Keturah Banning Tomlinson and her sisters find themselves the heiresses of their father's estates and know they have one option: Go to the West Indies to save what is left of their heritage.

Although it flies against all the conventions, they're determined to make their own way in the world. But once they arrive in the Caribbean, conventions are the least of their concerns. On the infamous island of Nevis, the sisters discover the legacy of the legendary sugar barons has vastly declined -- and that's just the start of what their eyes are opened to in this harsh and unfamiliar world.

Keturah never intends to put herself at the mercy of a man again, but every man on the island seems to be trying to win her hand and, with it, the ownership of her plantation. She could desperately use an ally, but even an unexpected reunion with a childhood friend leaves her questioning his motives.

To keep her family together and save the plantation that is her last chance at providing for them, can Keturah ever surrender her stubbornness and guarded heart to God and find the healing and love awaiting her?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

This weekly reading list meme is hosted at Book Date. Join in to see what others are reading and maybe get some ideas of what to read next!

Last week I posted my Monthly Bookshelf instead of just a weekly update, so I guess I'll do two weeks worth this time.

I finished reading . . .

Judah's Wife: A Novel of the Maccabees (The Silent Years) by Angela Hunt - I had finished this just before my last weekly update but the review wasn't posted. (You can now find the full review HERE.)

The Mayflower Bride: Daughters of the Mayflower by Kimberley Woodhouse - An interesting historical novel about Mary Elizabeth, a Separatist sailing on the Mayflower, and William, one of the Strangers. (Read my full review HERE.)

I'm currently reading . . .

A Light on the Hill (Cities of Refuge) by Connilyn Cossette - Moriyah bears a brand from her captivity in Jericho and many of her Hebrew neighbors assume it means the worst. Her father arranges a marriage for her but it appears her betrothed will only accept her for her dowry.

As Death Draws Near (A Lady Darby Mystery) by Anna Lee Huber - Keira and her new husband Sebastian Gage are in Ireland investigating the murder of a nun.

Keturah (The Sugar Baron's Daughters) by Lisa T. Bergren - Just got started on this novel. Three sisters receive news of their father's death in the West Indies and that the sugar plantation there is failing. The oldest daughter, Keturah, decides to go manage the estate herself until a trustworthy estate manager can be hired.

Scripture and a Snapshot - Stronghold

I will give thanks to you, LORD, with all my heart;
I will tell of all your wonderful deed.
I will be glad and rejoice in you;
I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High.

The LORD reigns forever;
he has established his throne for judgment.
He rules the world in righteousness
and judges the peoples with equity.
The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
Those who know your name trust in you,
for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.

~Psalm 9:1-2, 7-10~

Recent Reads - The Mayflower Bride

This post contains affiliate links.

The Mayflower Bride: Daughters of the Mayflower by Kimberley Woodhouse - Mary Elizabeth Chapman is quite fearful when she discovers that she and her father and younger brother will be journeying to the New World to establish a settlement. She doesn't consider herself adventurous and it takes the enthusiasm of her best friend Dorothy and reliance on her faith to help her cope with the upheaval. When their ship, the Speedwell, proves unreliable, most of the Separatists transfer to the other ship, the Mayflower. There Mary Elizabeth meets William Lytton, one of the carpenters and a Stranger. William is unsure of what he believes about God, but he is attracted to Mary Elizabeth immediately, and soon begins meeting with one of the elders to study the Scripture. The crew and passengers of the Mayflower face many hardships on their journey, and Mary Elizabeth continually turns to God for strength to face the circumstances that terrify and worry her. And throughout the journey, she and William are developing their relationship, so that by the time they reach Plimouth, they've decided they want to marry.

Although this was a good book, I didn't consider it great. Apparently the conflicts the characters face in the form of storms, illness and disease, and close quarters on the ship are not enough; because there is another character named Peter that appears every now and again. His purpose is to discredit William somehow, and so take his job. William had been offered a sum of money from the investors to keep careful records of the business of the settlers, and this is what Peter is after. I felt this part of the story was contrived and largely unnecessary to move the plot. I was also a little disappointed to see a few anachronisms throughout the narrative, because overall I felt that the story and its historical context and setting was very well researched and presented with a fair amount of realism. Basically, I felt the whole story just fell a bit flat and short of my expectations.

From the publisher:

Can a religious separatist and an opportunistic spy make it in the New World?
A brand new series for fans of all things related to history, romance, adventure, faith, and family trees.

Mary Elizabeth Chapman boards the Speedwell in 1620 as a Separatist seeking a better life in the New World. William Lytton embarks on the Mayflower as a carpenter looking for opportunities to succeed--and he may have found one when a man from the Virginia Company offers William a hefty sum to keep a stealth eye on company interests in the new colony. The season is far too late for good sailing and storms rage, but reaching land is no better as  food is scarce and the people are weak. Will Mary Elizabeth survive to face the spring planing and unknown natives? Will William be branded a traitor and expelled?

Part of the Daughters of the Mayflower series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.
