And he [Jesus] was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him And Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Rise, and have no fear." And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

I guess we can identify with Peter in a way. Don't we want to just stay there on the mountaintop when we have such an amazing worship experience? That's how I feel sometimes - and I think it's a good thing to desire that closeness to the Lord and want it always. That's our little glimpse of heaven. But as long as we're in this world, we'll have to live in its reality, and that means going back to work and school and whatever our daily routines are. Those mountaintop experiences are meant to strengthen us for our mission and the challenges we face. And like Peter, we need to be reminded that it's not the experience or the memory of it that we focus on. Whether we're up on the mountain or down in the valley, we focus on Jesus.
When we worship, we see no one but Jesus only.

ReplyDeleteThose "mountaintop experiences" are what we live for, aren't they? The reminder to focus on Jesus, rather than our own feelings is a good one. Our goal as Christians should be to become selfless.

ReplyDeleteIndeed! My daughter and I were recently talking about how reality comes rushing back after a Christian retreat. Your insight concerning where our focus should be on the mountain or in the valley is a great reminder.

I have been going to church with my mum since the summertime. It's so nice to have this time to worship with her. I think that Jesus is working in both of us so that we can have this time together since she is 84 and we are beginning to have a sense of how special our time together is.
