Recent Reads - A Note Yet Unsung

A Note Yet Unsung (A Belmont Mansion Novel) by Tamera Alexander - Rebekah Carrington has returned home to Nashville after spending several years studying music in Vienna, but she soon decides it would be impossible for her to live with her mother and stepfather and begins a desperate search for employment. Her greatest hope is to be accepted into the newly formed Nashville Philharmonic so she manages to audition for Maestro Tate Whitcomb. Although the violin is her instrument, she auditions for an oboe part because she knows that a woman playing the violin in public is still considered socially inappropriate and scandalous. Rebekah had seen an article written by Whitcomb that had been positive about women musicians being included in orchestras, but unfortunately for her, he knows that the donors holding the purse strings of the fledgling Nashville Philharmonic would never approve.

Tate's initial irritation at Rebekah's boldness in forcing the audition fades when he realizes how talented she is, but he dares not accept her into the orchestra for fear of the wealthy patrons withdrawing their support. He is struggling to finish his symphony in time for the opening of the opera hall, while trying to get his musicians prepared, and while spending weekends visiting his ailing father whenever possible. In addition, he is facing his own health concerns - but surely he is just overtired and anxious, and once the symphony is complete he'll feel better. He knows he needs help, and Rebekah's musical talent and ambition are the perfect complement to help him complete his composition and transcribe all the music. After disappointing her so bitterly at her audition, it takes some time - and some pressure from Rebekah's new employer, Adelicia Cheatham - for Rebekah to accept the situation. She and Tate form a partnership as they work on the music, and a friendship as well. And it could be so much more than a friendship, except it seems their careers may take them in separate directions after the symphony is complete.

Both characters face complex situations that test their loyalties and integrity, and both must decide what they can sacrifice and what chances they can take in order to pursue their dreams while still honoring God first with their musical gifts. I loved this story that gives a glimpse of what it was like for women to earn their place as respected musicians and performers while also telling a compelling story of love and family loyalty.

From the Publisher:

A master violinist trained in Vienna, Rebekah Carrington manages to wheedle her way into an audition with the maestro at the newly formed Nashville Philharmonic. But women are "far too fragile and frail" for the rigors of an orchestra, and Rebekah's hopes are swifly dashed because the conductor -- determined to leave his mark on the world of classical music -- bows to public opinion. To make matters worse, Adelicia Acklen Cheatham, mistress of Belmont Mansion and Rebekah's new employer, agrees with him.

Nationally acclaimed conductor Nathaniel Tate Whitcomb is Nashville's new orchestra leader. And despite a reluctant muse -- and a strange buzzing and recurring pain in his head -- he must finish composing his symphony before the grand opening of the city's new opera hall. But far more pressing, he must finish it for the one who first inspired his love of music -- his father, who is dying. As Tate's ailment worsens, he believes Rebekah can help him finish his symphony. But how do you win back a woman's trust when you've robbed her of her dream?

As music moves us to tears yet makes our hearts soar, A Note Yet Unsung captures the splendor of classical music at a time when women's hard-won strides in cultural issues changed not only world history - but the hearts of men.

We had two vehicles totaled in separate accidents about a month apart. So we now have two new-to-us vehicles in our driveway. The RAV4 and the red Corolla that you can kind of see behind it.

First Chapter/First Paragraph/Tuesday Intros is a weekly link-up hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea. To participate, share the first paragraph (or two) of a book you're reading, or thinking about reading.

London, September 1887

"For the love of all that is holy, Veronica, the object is to maim or kill, not tickle," Stoker informed me, clipping the words sharply as he handed me a knife. "Do it again."
I suppressed a sigh and took the knife, grasping it lightly as I had been taught. I faced the target, staring it down as if it were an approaching lion.
"You are thinking too much." Stoker folded his arms over the breadth of his chest and looked down his nose at me. "The entire purpose of this exercise is to train you to react, not to think. When your life is in danger, your body must know what to do, because there is no time for your mind to engage."
I turned to face him, not lowering the blade. "Might I remind you that I have, upon many and various occasions, been in mortal danger and I am still here."
"Anyone can get lucky," he said coldly. "And I suspect your continued survival owes itself to a combination of good fortune and sheer bloody-mindedness. You are too stubborn to die."

Here's the blurb:

London, 1887. Victorian adventuress and butterfly hunter Veronica Speedwell receives an invitation to visit the Curiosity Club, a ladies-only establishment for daring and intrepid women. There she meets the mysterious Lady Sundridge, who begs her to take on an impossible task -- saving society art patron Miles Ramsforth from execution. Accused of the brutal murder of his artist mistress Artemisia, Ramsforth will face the hangman's noose in a week's time if Veronica cannot find the real killer.

But Lady Sundridge is not all that she seems, and unmasking her true identity is only the first of the many secrets Veronica must uncover. Together with her natural historian colleague Stoker, Veronica races against time to find the true murderer -- a ruthless villain who not only took Artemisia's life in cold blood but is happy to see Ramsforth hang for the crime. From a Bohemian artists' colony to a royal palace to a subterranean grotto with a decadent history, the investigation proves to be a very perilous undertaking indeed . . .

What I'm Reading - February 6, 2017

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

This weekly reading list meme is hosted at Book Date. Join in to see what others are reading and maybe get some ideas of what to read next! I also link up with Tales of a Pee Dee Mama for D.E.A.R. Monday (Drop Everything And Read).

I finished reading . . .

A Note Yet Unsung (A Belmont Mansion Novel) by Tamera Alexander - Absolutely loved this novel about a young woman's dream of playing violin in an orchestra during a time when it was not considered appropriate. My full review coming soon!

I'm currently reading . . .

A Perilous Undertaking (A Veronica Speedwell Mystery) by Deanna Raybourn - the unflappable and always entertaining Veronica and Stoker are investigating a murder and finding plenty of clues that have been covered up! Can they find out the truth before a potentially innocent man hangs for murder?

Here, There Be Dragons (Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica) by James A. Owen - Read some during the beginning of the week, but then got way too busy to keep up during the last several days. I'll hopefully get back to it today!

A Christmas Valentine by Jamie Carie - I've enjoyed a couple of Carie's previous books and picked up this Valentine's theme novella free for my Kindle during the week. It's a contemporary setting and so hasn't really grabbed me yet, but hey - it's short, it's free, and it's a week before Valentine's Day, and I needed something to read on my Kindle!

Scripture and a Snapshot - Renew

Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, you, God, will not despise.

~Psalm 51:10-12, 17~

Book Blogger Hop - February 3, 2017

Welcome to another Book Blogger Hop question. Visit Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer to see the responses from other book bloggers.

Read or clean? Read or bake? Read or make dinner? What would be your choice?

I don't particularly like housecleaning or cooking, so I'd definitely choose to read instead. The trouble is, of course, that the housekeeping tasks are mostly my responsibility and the people that live here do expect me to make meals. I very often read while I'm stirring a pot of something at the stove. I do like baking, so I suppose there are occasions when I might choose to bake rather than read.
