Scripture and a Snapshot - Like a Flower

As a father has compassion on his children,

so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;

for he knows how we are formed,

he remembers that we are dust.

The life of mortals is like grass,

they flourish like a flower of the field;

the wind blows over it and it is gone,

and its place remembers it no more.

But from everlasting to everlasting

the LORD's love is with those who fear him,

and his righteousness with their children's children -

with those who keep his covenant

and remember to obey his precepts.

~Psalm 103:13-18~

During this past week, we had the privilege of seeing some incredibly beautiful gardens and conservatories. Gorgeous plants and flowers in breathtaking landscape and garden settings. This Scripture reminds me that all that stunning beauty is really just temporary. Although we may mark some of these buildings as historic treasures, they will eventually crumble. Although we may honor the memories and achievements of those who built these gardens, created artwork, or designed and financed these beautiful spaces, these things will all fade over time.

And God knows it, and he loves us anyway, and offers us the eternal. He will keep his promises forever, and his love is everlasting.

Wordless Wednesday - Cincinnati

This is vacation/staycation week for us. On the weekend we spent time in Columbus with our son and his family, and on Sunday we all drove down to Cincinnati for a Reds game. It was the first time I'd been in Cincinnati, and since it's right on the state line, I could also add Kentucky to the list of states I've visited. We parked in Covington, Kentucky and walked across the bridge to the ballpark.

Had to have a chili dog with Skyline chili!

My daughter likes the Chicago Cubs (visiting team) and they won the game, so she wanted a victory photo after the game.

I happened to catch her unaware in this photo, and I really like how it turned out.

Spent a little time in the playground after the game.

Scripture and a Snapshot - Better Than Life

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you;

I thirst for you,

my whole being longs for you,

in a dry and parched land where there is no water.

I have seen you in the sanctuary

and beheld your power and glory.

Because your love is better than life,

my lips will glorify you.

I will praise you as long as I live,

Wordless Wednesday - Family Camp

On the weekend we were at a church camp. Our family worship band provided the music for the Saturday night concert and service.

This cottage was our home base, thanks to our very good friend who allowed us to stay in her place since she wasn't coming up to camp until the day we were leaving. 

This is the tabernacle where the services were held.

And on a lighter note - this is the way we had to rig up a mic for the drum box! The sound system was fantastic, but not surprisingly, they didn't have a short table-top type mic stand, so we came up with our own. And were pretty proud of it too!

What I'm Reading - August 5, 2019

Although the Book Date link-up happens weekly, I haven't been keeping up with a weekly schedule, so I kind of post these whenever! It's been almost a month since my last one. Here's the latest from my reading list.

I finished reading . . . 

 An Artless Demise (A Lady Darby Mystery) by Anna Lee Huber - Resurrectionists are at work in London again, and a murderer is targeting wealthy heirs making it look like the work of the burkers. Kiera and Gage must track down the killer as the danger to Kiera intensifies. (Read my full review HERE.)

I'm currently reading . . .

Unshakeable: A Story of Unwavering Faith and Conviction by Elizabeth Wiens - I'm actually finished this but need to write a review for The Old Schoolhouse before posting a brief review here. This novel is about families in Alberta, Canada that decide to continue homeschooling even after the provincial government makes it unlawful to do so.




The Year of Living Danishly: Uncovering the Secrets of the World's Happiest Country by Helen Russell - this memoir is really on the backburner right now, but I have been working on it a little bit.




A Study In Scarlet Women (The Lady Sherlock Series) by Sherry Thomas - I got started on the first few pages of this lady detective novel just as other books arrived for me to review, so I had to set it aside briefly as well. An intriguing start so I'm looking forward to getting back to it!




The Yellow Lantern: True Colors: Historical Stories of American Crime by Angie Dicken - Having just finished a mystery centered around British resurrectionists, it's interesting that I also received this novel about grave robbers and resurrectionists that is set in America. A young woman regains consciousness to find that she has been presumed dead and the surgeon had just obtained her body. Pretty chilling opening!

Scripture and a Snapshot - Partnership

I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus. I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ.

Are there painted rock groups in your area? I didn't know much about this trend until recently, so I don't know how long it's been a thing, but I think it's a great idea. The premise is very simple - paint and decorate small rocks and "hide" for others to find. On the back of the rock is the name of the group where you can post on Facebook that you found their rock and then you can keep it or rehide it. The purpose? Simply to spread smiles and a bit of encouragement to people. People you don't know, and might never meet, but the cute picture or positive message on the rock may bring them joy when they need it. And when someone posts in the Facebook group saying they found the rock, that brings a smile to the painter or hider, and maybe to the group owner. I belong to a group that hides rocks to honor the memory of the group owner's son, so every "like" and found rock is an encouragement to a mom still missing her boy. 

The rock garden in the photo I shared is a partnership between a local church and a painted rock group. The garden is on the church property and is a central place for participants to place rocks or collect them to "hide" in other spots. Those who participate in painting the rocks are, from what I can tell, from all kinds of backgrounds and ideologies, and not nearly all of them are members of that church. But they partner together to scatter kindness, and I believe that God will honor that, and who knows how many lives may be touched by the partnership?
