Scripture and a Snapshot - Sacrifice of Praise

Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise -- the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

Pudd'nhead Wilson by Mark Twain  - I read this with my girls in a Lit class I'm teaching at our co-op. Everyone enjoyed this classic that includes a courtroom drama and switched identities. (Read my full review HERE.)




Secrets in the Mist (A Gothic Myths Novel) by Anna Lee Huber - Suspense, intrigue, secrets, and a simmering romance in this Gothic styled novel. (Read my full review HERE.)

  


A Study In Scarlet Women (The Lady Sherlock Series) by Sherry Thomas - In this version of Sherlock Holmes, the detective is actually a young woman named Charlotte Holmes, who must find a murderer when her own family comes under suspicion. (Read my full review HERE)

Detective Trigger and the Ruby Collar by M.A. Owens - A clever mystery for young readers featuring a canine detective and a humorous film noir vibe.




A Stranger at Fellsworth by Sarah E. Ladd - With the passing of their parents, Annabelle's brother inherits a financial disaster, and she faces the loss of her position in society. The only option she sees is to go to her uncle at Fellsworth.




Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton - I started to see a connection (for the Connect 5 challenge) of books with themes of prejudice and racism. In order to finish the set of five, I decided to read this classic from my TBR, set in South Africa during the years of apartheid.

Scripture and a Snapshot - Great Reward

The law of the LORD is perfect,

refreshing the soul.

The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy,

making wise the simple.

The precepts of the LORD are right,

giving joy to the heart.

The commands of the LORD are radiant,

giving light to the eyes.

The fear of the LORD is pure,

enduring forever.

The decrees of the LORD are firm,

and all of them are righteous.

They are more precious than gold,

than much pure gold;

they are sweeter also than honey,

than honey from the the honeycomb.

By them is your servant warned;

in keeping them there is great reward.

Recent Reads - Secrets in the Mist

Secrets in the Mist (A Gothic Myths Novel) by Anna Lee Huber - I've been following Huber's Lady Darby series and new Verity Kent series faithfully, but this is less mystery and more Gothic novel. In fact, the cover blurb compares the style to author Victoria Holt, and I've enjoyed quite a few of her novels in the past as well.

Ella Winterton often braves the treacherous bogs and marshes of the Norfolk broads to visit her best friend Kate at Rocklands. On a late night trip, Ella is confronted by a Lantern Man - a figure of local legend - as she navigates the foggy marsh. The bobbing lights in the marsh might well be smugglers taking advantage of the lore used to frighten children from wandering into the marsh, but this Lantern Man is very real, and to Ella's surprise he seems to be protective of her. Still, she keeps her encounter a secret, and the mysterious Lantern Man shows up on other occasions as well.

Ella has lived quietly but in increasing poverty since the death of her mother and brother. Her father is a drunkard, and Ella has turned to selling off the family's artwork, jewelry, and even the furnishings of the cottage in order to keep the roof over their heads. She and the faithful housekeeper are watchful to keep her father's brandy bottles hidden and disposed of when empty. They must, because it's been smuggled into England illegally and puts them at risk of being fined or jailed. As careful as they are, the revenue men do catch them unawares and the resulting fines and threats make Ella desperate.

Without anything left to sell to raise the needed funds, and with growing understanding that the Lantern Man is indeed part of a smuggling operation, she makes the fateful decision to ask him if she can join the smuggling crew to earn the money she needs to pay her father's debt. She is plunged into a world of danger and intrigue, and fears that there is no one she can trust as she begins to realize the scope of the smuggling operation she is now tangled up in.

The comparison to Victoria Holt's novels is apt, and this one is full of suspense and intrigue, as well as a simmering romantic tangle. Kate's brother Robert was once Ella's fiance, and he renews his offer of marriage to her, but she is unsure of her feelings. And meanwhile, she can't deny her unreasonable attraction to the Lantern Man. There are several twists and turns in her relationships with these two men, as well as with her friend Kate and with her family.

Britfield & the Lost Crown by C.R. Stewart - Finished this YA novel, which I reviewed for the Homeschool Review Crew, in August, but didn't get the review posted here until early this month. It's about two orphans who escape the awful orphanage and race across England following a clue to the boy's parents and avoiding the many forces trying to catch them. (Read my full review HERE)




The Butterfly Recluse by Therese Heckencamp - Lila tells herself she doesn't need to interact with anyone as long as she has her butterflies, until a motorcycle-riding stranger charges into her garden. (Read my full review HERE.)




Pudd'nhead Wilson by Mark Twain - The classic novel of switched identities, and racial prejudice in the antebellum South, complete with a murder mystery and a tense courtroom scene. (Read my full review HERE)
