The Adventuress: A Lady Emily Mystery by Tasha Alexander - Lady Emily has been one of my favorite fictional sleuths for quite some time, so I was eagerly awaiting the latest installment of her adventures. And an adventure it was, as the title indicates!

Emily and her husband Colin have joined a party in the French Riviera to celebrate the engagement of the Duke of Bainbridge to American heiress Amity Wells. The Duke is Emily's longtime friend, Jeremy. It came as a surprise to everyone among his friends that Jeremy would finally marry, having avoided it for so long, but he is clearly smitten with the nearly perfect Amity. Mr and Mrs Wells are very wealthy and have a flair for extravagant parties, but their manners are rather rough. Combined with Amity's boldness, there are some early moments of unease as Emily and some of her friends wonder if there is something not quite right about the whole thing.

Especially since no one had expected Jeremy's friend to take his own life during the festivities, and that event happens to be the opener of the book. There is nothing to suggest that Mr Neville would have been contemplating suicide, yet that is apparently what happened. Emily's instincts tell her that something more sinister was afoot but evidence is hard to come by. As the days go by, the strange behavior of some of the party guests, some frightening circumstances, and an odd hostility towards Emily herself do much to convince her that Mr Neville's death was perhaps a bungled attempt on someone else's life. Emily will need all her considerable ingenuity and wit to find the truth and to save her own life and that of the intended victim.

As in The Counterfeit Heiress, the narrative switches between Lady Emily's first person account of events, and a third person account of Amity's point of view. The Amity chapters begin several months in the past and provide some of the background for what has happened, and move closer to the present setting of the story.

  1. I enjoyed your review. I haven't heard of this author before but after reading your post I ordered the first book from the library and I'm already a 1/3 of the way through. :)

  2. I have not heard of this series or author. I am intrigued. I am usually not a mystery genre reader, but these era type of mysteries seem to suit me. I am going to see if my library has a copy.
