Perla squared her shoulders as best she could. Life was a journey, and she was determined not to let this stroke business sidetrack her. She needed to get her voice back so she could tell Ella and Sadie what they needed to know.

   Why did she agree to have lunch with Mark? He'd been out of her life for almost a year now. What had possessed her to say yes when he suggested meeting? Ella peered at her former fiance over her menu, then refocused on the day's special when he caught her looking.

   Honestly, she wasn't even attracted to him anymore. She'd once thought those dense, dark curls and square jaw were handsome, but what she'd once seen as chiseled just looked hard now.

   "Don't you have Perrier?" he asked the server.

   "We have bottled water," she said.

   "Only still, though. Am I right?"

   The server looked confused.

I'm currently reading . . .

The Winter Crown: A Novel of Eleanor of Aquitaine by Elizabeth Chadwick - If I had more time to read, I'd be finished this already - seems like I only have short spurts of time to read lately.




Timebound (The Chronos Files)by Rysa Walker - I got through another chapter, and I'll give it a chapter or two more to grab me.




A Pressing Engagement (A Lady Darby Mystery) by Anna Lee Huber - Reading this novella from a favorite series while awaiting the next full length novel in the series. It's published, but I haven't got my hands on a copy yet.




A Tapestry of Secrets by Sarah Loudin Thomas - just started on this novel in a series I've liked a great deal. It's for a Bethany House review coming soon.

The Pharaoh's Daughter: A Treasures of the Nile Novel by Mesu Andrews - put this novel about the Egyptian princess that adopted Moses on hold during the week since I didn't have a lot of reading time and got started on two new things on my Kindle.

Wordless Wednesday - Gas Pump

Our latest acquisition and future project - this 1960s gas pump was used at the car lot and garage that my husband's family operated. When the garage was sold, the pump was moved to his sister's house, and now it has come to our house. We'd like to clean it up and put a light in it.

Recent Reads - The Boden Birthright

The Boden Birthright: A Cimarron Legacy Novella by Mary Connealy - I came across this prequel novella after enjoying the first novel in the Cimarron Legacy series. It introduces the patriarch of the Boden family, Chance, and tells the story of how he and his oldest son, Cole, arrived in New Mexico Territory looking to stake a land claim and make it on his own. He finds more than just a temporary home at the Cimarron Ranch though, when Frank Chastain offers him a job and help in choosing some good neighboring land for himself. As Chance learns all he can about ranching from Frank, he's also grateful for the help Frank's daughter Veronica gives him in caring for young Cole, and Frank takes notice. Veronica suspects her father is planning some matchmaking - to which she isn't opposed - but his plans are hurried along unexpectedly when he is shot and begs Chance and Veronica to marry immediately in order to secure the inheritance of the land.

A good introduction to the Boden family, and a surprising amount of detail in a relatively short and engaging story.

This novella is a prequel to the recently released fifth novel in the series, As Death Draws Near. I'm hoping to get my hands on that soon!

It still amazed me at times that I was about to marry him. We had both come so very far from who we'd been ony a year ago. I remembered how at first I'd thought him to be a pompous, dim-witted, interfering rogue.

I didn't finish anything during the week! I'm a little surprised, because we took a short vacation, and I usually manage to knock off quite a bit of reading during trips like that. I did read plenty, but didn't actually complete a book until last night (The Boden Birthright), so I will review that today.
