I recently finished reading...

Regency Buck by Georgette Heyer - This sat on my TBR pile for a long time before I got going on it, and then during the early chapters, I wondered whether I'd ever finish, as other things kept taking my attention away. Well, it was worth sticking with, as it turned out to be a real page-turner, and I finished up the last half of it very quickly since I had a hard time putting it down! (Read my review HERE.)



I'm currently reading...

Murther and Walking Spirits by Robertson Davies - got sidetracked on this, again, but I'm back at it.




The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux - ditto. Sidetracked, but now back in the saddle.

 

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo - I've got mixed feelings about this. Most of the buzz I'm reading about the book is positive, but even in the first several pages, I'm reminded that it's coming from a different worldview than mine.

Recent Reads - Regency Buck

Regency Buck by Georgette Heyer - Although it took me longer to get "into" this Heyer novel, it soon turned into a page-turner that I could not easily put down! Judith Taverner and her brother Peregrine travel to London to meet their guardian shortly after their father's death, and are very surprised to find that Lord Worth is a young and popular gentleman about town rather than the elderly man they'd expected. Their relationship gets off to a rocky start, with Judith and Perry determined to do as they please and have as little to do with Lord Worth as possible. Of course, their paths do cross again and again as the Taverners enter London society; and Lord Worth takes a firm hand in their affairs, much to their chagrin.

Then it begins to appear as though someone is trying to do away with Perry, and Judith wonders just whom she can trust. Their cousin, Bernard Taverner, has been a kind friend to them, but Judith is very uneasy about his father, and can't forget that Bernard stands to gain if Perry is out of the way and he can convince Judith to accept his hand. Judith finds Lord Worth difficult to get on with at times, but even she admits - to herself, at least! - that she has no real reason to mistrust him. Except . . . that she wonders whether he intends to have her married to his younger brother (whom she likes and respects very much) and thus keep control of her fortune after she reaches majority.

The suspense, once the attempts on Perry form an important theme in the story, is masterfully done. Judith's suspicions about some of Perry's near misses were correct, but like her, I found it difficult to decide where the blame might be laid. The potential villains are several and the narration doesn't give much away until the final chapters, when I found out along with Judith exactly who had done what - and more importantly, why they had done it. 

A very satisfying and entertaining Regency, as I've grown to expect from Heyer. The principle personalities are interesting and none are paragons of virtue, but are a realistic combination of likeable and irritating characteristics; and Heyer's witty and masterful storytelling makes this another winner!

Book Blogger Hop - November 6, 2015

Once again, I've been neglecting the Book Blogger Hop questions of the week from Ramblings of a Coffee Addicted Writer. Usually it's just because I'm too busy with other things, and totally miss it! Since I haven't posted any reviews this week, I thought I'd better do something to make sure my blog was updated a bit! We'll see what happens next week!

As you are reading a book, do you take notes for your reviews, write your reviews as you read, or something totally different? 

I rarely take notes for reviews while reading fiction, but when I read non-fiction for a review, I jot down notes on a piece of notepaper, and use that as my bookmark.
