Star of Wonder: A Novella (The Incense Road Book 1)
by Tracy L Higley - I've enjoyed several of Tracy Higley's books in the past, and was very interested in this trilogy based on the Biblical story of the wise men and their journey following the star to find Jesus. In this, Book One, we are introduced to the main character, Misha, a young mage of Jewish descent, and a part of a small Jewish sect of the magi. He joins an expedition with a group of magi and soldiers, but their objective is to find an historic object that is believed to have the power to heal diseases - the Nehushtan, which is the bronze snake of the Exodus. Misha hopes to find this object before the others of the party, and to steal it back to heal his mother. In fact, Misha feels haunted and confused by the star that seems to speak to him. Other members of the party are the captain of the soldiers, who may be part of a plot to overthrow the Parthian king they serve; and Kamillah, and a young Egyptian woman who is one of the magi but was promised as a wife to the one who could bring the artifact back to the ailing Parthian king.
The majority of the story is told in first person by Misha, with a few chapters in third person that focus on Reza (the soldier) or Kamillah. The chapter headings do make it clear which viewpoint is ahead. This installment of The Incense Road trilogy includes the journey through the desert, the shifting loyalties and conflicting emotions and goals of the characters, and some adventure and danger as Misha tries to elude others from the party and decide who he might be able to trust if he is to be successful in winning the race for the Nehushtan and escape with it. The ending of this book is definitely a lead-in to Book Two in order to find out what happens to the characters and how they will finally arrive in Jerusalem to meet King Herod and eventually to see Jesus.
