Toward the Sunrise: An Until the Dawn Novella by Elizabeth Camden - Since I so thoroughly enjoyed Until the Dawn, it was a no-brainer to grab the novella that serves as an introduction to the series. In it, Julia Broeder, sister of the Dierenpark groundskeeper Emil, makes some impulsive decisions at medical school that result in her expulsion. Julia had been a very promising student, with ambitions to become a medical missionary and see the world. Her tuition was being paid by the eccentric and mysterious Vandermark family that owns Dierenpark, so Julia asked the lawyer that represented the family to help her appeal the school's decision. Ashton Carlyle had taken a personal interest in Julia's ambitions, although she didn't know it, but he initially refused to help her. Then Mr Vandermark himself orders Ashton to do whatever it takes to get Julia reinstated. 'Whatever it takes' turned out to include Ashton's helping Julia finish out a week of being midwife a local goats, convincing Julia that she should return to medical school and follow her dreams, and perhaps even losing his heart to her.

You can read Toward the Sunrise free on Kindle, and then look up the full-length novel Until the Dawn, which focuses more on Dierenpark, the Vandermark family, and Julia's best friend Sophie.
