The Captivating Lady Charlotte by Carolyn Miller - I finished this Regency novel with a hint of Gothic last weekend so got the review up this week.  (Read my full review HERE.)

I'm currently reading . . .

31 Proverbs to Light Your Path by Liz Curtis Higgs - A wonderfully practical devotional that I'm working through.

A Dangerous Legacy by Elizabeth Camden - Lucy and her brother are fighting their uncle for the rights to an important invention. Looks like the romance will develop between Lucy, who works for the Associated Press, and the new head of the rival Reuters agency.

Scripture and a Snapshot - Prayer Changes Everything

Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoing them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

~James 5:13-16~

Pray without ceasing. ~I Thessalonians 5:17

Recent Reads - The Captivating Lady Charlotte

This post contains affiliate links.

The Captivating Lady Charlotte by Carolyn Miller - This is the second in a series, following The Elusive Miss Ellison, and follows Lavinia Ellison's cousin, Charlotte. It's not necessary to have read the first in order to enjoy this story, but some of the characters make return appearances.

Lady Charlotte makes her bow to the queen and is launched into society, and since she is the daughter of a wealthy duke, she is sought after by eligible bachelors for her dowry and connections as much as for her beauty. Charlotte desperately wants to marry for love, having seen her cousin's romance unfold, but she is young and naive. She is flattered and swept off her feet by the attentions of one of her brother's friends, even though Lord Markham is considered to be a rake and a fortune hunter. And when her parents inform her that a recently widowed duke is their choice for her, she is angry and decides that he is old and staid compared to Markham, and balks at her mother's machinations.

William Hartwell, Duke of Hartington, is wealthy and intelligent and not that much older, but he recently buried his wife amid the whispered scandals of her betrayal and unfaithfulness. He is indeed captivated by Lady Charlotte and the glimpses of her compassion and kindness, but because of the scars of his first marriage he is cautious about trusting her. Especially since he knows she would prefer the dashing young Markham.

With some help from Lavinia and her husband, Charlotte and William start getting to know each other and as Charlotte's eyes are opened to William's character and Markham's true colors, she does her best to learn to love the duke she's been promised to. However, there are many suspicious happenings at the duke's estate and it appears there is someone who wishes them harm. Can William keep Charlotte safe until the villain is found, and can he also win her love and affection?

Teaser Tuesday/First Chapter First Paragraph - A Dangerous Legacy

This post contains affiliate links.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by Ambrosia at The Purple Booker. To play along, just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • Be careful not to include spoilers!
  • Share the title and author, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR lists if they like your teasers!
It was also entirely illegal. She wasn't proud of breaking the law, but all it took was the sort of dirty move Uncle Thomas had pulled in court this morning to strengthen her resolve.

First Chapter/First Paragraph/Tuesday Intros is a weekly link-up hosted by Bibliophile by the Sea. To participate, share the first paragraph (or two) of a book you're reading, or thinking about reading.

New York City
1903

The amount of female attention her brother garnered never failed to amaze Lucy. Even when he was wearing grubby coveralss and carrying a sack of plumber's tools, girls flocked around Nick as though her were Casanova. Lucy watched from a few yards away as they waited for the streetcar after a long day at work.

Nick was fiercely intelligent, handsome, and had an easy laugh, but what would those girls do if they knew that anyone who befriended him would be targeted for complete and total ruin? Few people lingered for long once they drew her uncle's attention. She and Nick had been raised since birth to be on guard against underhanded attacks from Uncle Thomas, but it would take someone with a backbone of steel to stand alongside them once her uncle got wind of it.

Here's the blurb:

Telegraph operator Lucy Drake is a master of Morse code and has made herself a valuable asset to the Associated Press news agency. But the sudden arrival of Sir Colin Beckwith at rival British news agency Reuters puts her hard-earned livelihood at risk. Colin is talented, handsome, insufferably charming -- and keeping a secret that jeopardizes his reputation.

Despite their rivalry, Lucy can't deny that Colin has the connections she needs to give her family an edge in the long legal battle they've been waging over their rightful inheritance. But when she negotiates an unlikely alliance with him, the web of treachery they dive into proves to be far more dangerous than they ever could have known.
