Ticker by Lisa Mantchev - It took me awhile to get moving on this one again, but once I got into it, I really enjoyed this YA steampunk novel. Penny Farthing is a girl with a clockwork heart - her damaged heart has been replaced with a Ticker, but it's showing signs of failing too. The brilliant surgeon who invented it wants to give her an upgrade, but he's on trial for murder, and it's discovered that there is a very dark side to his experiments and wishes to "augment" people who have injuries or physical defects.

As the doctor's trial is wrapping up, the Farthings' factory is bombed and Penny's parents disappear, and Penny teams up with her brother Nic and a couple of friends to find them - and find the doctor who escaped from the courthouse in the chaos. What is really going on and is Dr Warwick behind it all?

Finally, Penny reluctantly accepts help from Marcus Kingsley, a young military commander, to find her missing family and the research that has gone missing with them. And while the story is full of action at breakneck speed, there's also a rather sweet romance slowly developing in the background.

This is an action-packed race through the fictional city of Bazalgate, with interesting world-building and shifting loyalties. I occasionally got lost in the descriptions of imaginative mechanical devices and then realized that a relationship shift or motive hadn't been clear. There are places where it feels like the logic or plot details might have a few holes, but they seem to be small ones, and I enjoyed the story almost as much this time as I did the first.

A girl with a clockwork heart must make every second count.

When Penny Farthing nearly dies, brilliant surgeon Calvin Warwick manages to implant a brass "Ticker" in her chest, transforming her into the first of the Augmented. But soon it's discovered that Warwick killed dozens of people as he strove to perfect another improved Ticker for Penny, and he's put on trial for mass murder.

On the last day of Warwick's trial, the Farthings' factory is bombed, Penny's parents disappear, and Penny and her brother, Nic, receive a ransom note demanding all of their Augmentation research if they want to see their parents again. Is someone trying to destroy the Farthings . . . or is the motive more sinister?

Desperate to reunite their family and rescue their research, Penny and her brother recruit fiery baker Violet Nesselrode, gentleman-about-town Sebastian Stirling, and Marcus Kingsley, a young army general who has his own reasons for wanting to lift the veil between this world and the next. Wagers are placed, friends are lost, romance stages an ambush, and time is running out for the girl with the clockwork heart.

This is a book featuring a grieving character (#14) for The 52 Book Club's 2024 Reading Challenge.

In his haste to depart, he had overlooked a daguerrotype half-hidden by my bedding. . . There was something familiar about the glass, something that teased around the edges of my mind. I'd seen pictures like this before, but where?

Ticker
Ticker by Lisa Mantchev - Penny Farthing has a clockwork heart. The doctor who invented it saved her life, but at what cost to others? Dr Warwick is awaiting trial for murder, because his testing of improvements to the Ticker and other Augmentations have killed dozens of people. On the last day of his trial, there are protests throughout Bazalgate, and an explosion at the Farthings' factory that nearly kills Penny's brother Nic. When Penny and Nic finally make it home, they discover that their parents have been kidnapped, and they receive a ransom note demanding all the research for Augmentation.

With the help of friends Violet and Sebastian, and the head of the security force army, Marcus Kingsley, Penny and Nic try to stay ahead of the mysterious enemies and unravel the mystery of who has kidnapped their parents and why.

This is the first steampunk novel I've read, and I have to say I loved it from the opening sentence. Well, from my first look at the cover art, actually! Bazalgate is set in an alternate universe that is a charming - and surprisingly believable - combination of Victorian industrial and futuristic mechanical world. The story is told from Penny's point of view, and she is delightfully plucky and determined character, with a witty and slightly ironic voice. The mystery was detailed enough to keep me guessing even when I had a good hunch as to what was going on, and the romantic elements were sweet and clean, yet with an undercurrent of powerful emotion and passion. This was another occasion when I absolutely fell in love with a book that is clearly intended for a young adult audience. It is so well-written and clever that I can heartily recommend it to adult and teen readers alike. In fact, I have already encouraged my young teen daughter to read it when she has the chance, and I myself am hoping to be able to read more by this author.

I finished Ticker by Lisa Mantchev a couple days ago - my review is coming soon!

"My dearest Miss Farthing, will you do me the unutterable honor of wearing this cheap bit of metal that will most likely turn your finger green, pretending to love and honor me as your husband for the purposes of subterfuge and strategem?"
"My hearts and stars, that will go down in the history books as the most romantic business proposition of the century, I am certain." Still my Ticker thudded in its new, horrible way as Marcus slid the ring onto my finger.

Violet gave me a narrow look. No doubt she wondered if I'd lied to her at SugarWerks or if I was lying now, but I would have died thrice over before admitting that Marcus had been the one to almost kill me, that his body pressed to mine and the heat between us had been enough to stop my heart. His gray eyes were on me as I tightened the mainspring. The muscles in my chest constricted under the combined pressure.
I am more than a pretty little windup doll.

I finally got started on two books that have been on my TBR list for quite awhile. First up is Ticker by Lisa Mantchev. It had me from the opening sentence:

A girl with a clockwork heart shouldn't be running late, but I was.
But here are the teasers:

Somewhere deep inside him still dwelled the caring surgeon and gentle man I'd known, but the blood of more than twenty people stained his hands, people he'd kidnapped off the streets of Bazalgate and experimented upon, testing different clockwork ventriculators...
All to save me.

Alec was glad to have a way to support his family that didn't involve dirty manual labor -- that relief was genuine enough. Yet he had his reservations about working for the woman who had single-handedly laid waste his career and plans for the future.
At least for the present.
