The Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi (A BookLook Review)

This post contains affiliate links.

The Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi: My Journey into the Heart of Scriptural Faith and the Land Where It All Began by Kathie Lee Gifford - This book is part devotional and part travelogue as TV personality Kathie Lee Gifford shares about her experience traveling through the Holy Land with Bible teacher and tour guide Ray Vander Laan. Gifford describes the sites they visited in Israel and her impressions as well as the summary of the lessons and insights shared by Vander Laan on those visits. In most chapters, there is also a lesson by Rabbi Jason Sobel that explains deeper meaning behind the Hebrew words and thoughts used in the Scripture. There are twenty-nine chapters detailing the sites visited, including Mount Carmel, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Galilee, the Mount of Olives, the Garden of Gethsemane, and several sites in the city of Jerusalem.

Having watched the entire DVD series of Ray Vander Laan's Bible tours in the Holy Land, I could easily picture the settings and was familiar with many of the insights shared from his teachings. I enjoyed reading Gifford's first-hand experience of being on the tour and her own thoughts at being on location during one of these tours. My favorite part of this book has been the writings of Rabbi Sobel. As a Jewish believer in Jesus, he gives valuable historical and rabbinical background and insight into the meaning of specific passages of Scripture and prophecy. He points out that Scripture uses certain words and phrases repeatedly and shares knowledge about how the Jewish people in Jesus' day would have understood the words and actions of the Messiah. The meaning of numbers is also significant and he uncovers some of those layers of meaning for readers as well. I found "aha" moments in each of his devotionals added to the book.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has watched and enjoyed the Vander Laan series and wants more insight; and to anyone interested in gaining a better understanding of the Bible in its original context.

From the publisher:

As a lifelong student of Scripture, Kathie Lee Gifford has always desired a deeper understanding of God's Word and a deeper knowledge of God Himself. But it wasn't until she began studying the biblical texts in their original Hebrew and Greek - along with actually hiking the ancient paths of Israel - that she found the fulfillment of those desires.

Now you can walk with Kathie on a journey through the spiritual foundations of her faith:

The Rock (Jesus Christ): Hear directly from Kathie about her life-changing and ever-deepening connection with Jesus, the Lover of her soul
The Road (Israel): Explore dozens of ancient landmarks and historical sites from Israel, the promised land of God's covenant.
The Rabbi (God's Word): Go beyond a Sunday school approach to the Bible by digging into the original languages and deeper meanings of the Holy Scriptures

As you journey through The Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi, you'll also find additional content from Messianic Rabbi Jason Sobel throughout the book. Jason's insight into the Hebrew language, culture, and heritage will open your eyes to the Bible like never before.

Come! Begin your journey toward a deeper faith through The Rock, the Road, and the Rabbi.

My Thoughts

I chose this beautiful Bible thinking it would make a lovely gift for my daughter who is graduating from high school soon. In many ways it's perfect for her, since she is a singer, songwriter, and musician, and she also loves art. Honestly, I may have a hard time giving it away! But she has already seen it briefly, and I think her reaction was everything I could have hoped for.

It has a lot of visual appeal, with the lovely water color cover and music notes gracing the gilded edges. The cloth cover, ribbon markers, and lined margins give it an elegance and indicate that it's a Bible for serious students; yet the artwork has a joyful cheer as well.

For those who like to journal, take sermon notes, or even create artwork inspired by their Scripture reading, the lined margins give space to do that without coloring over the text. And the text is in a clear and easy-on-the eyes font on creamy smooth high quality pages. The pages are not stark white, but more of a cream color, which enhances the readability too.

There are a couple of lined blank pages in the back for Notes, and a brief preface giving some information about the NIV translation, but there are no maps or additional study materials in the volume. It could be used as an elegant study Bible, with room for your own notes and thoughts.

A beautiful gift Bible!

Recent Reads - Dawn at Emberwilde by Sarah E. Ladd

Dawn at Emberwilde (A Treasures of Surrey Novel) by Sarah E. Ladd - Isabel Creston has been preparing for a future as a governess or teacher, so she is taken off guard when a stranger arrives at Fellsworth School with the news that she has an aunt who wishes Isabel to come live with her. Isabel and her young sister Lizzie relocate to the estate of Emberwilde, where they try to adjust to their new life. But in the dark woods on the estate, something dangerous is going on, and it threatens Isabel, and possibly many others as well. She must decide whether she can trust her new family, or either of the two handsome men that are vying for her affection.

Isabel is faced with some interesting choices in the beginning of the story, and although at first she felt she didn't have much choice in the matter at all, as events progressed she saw that she did have control over her own actions and conduct, and she gained confidence as she learned more about her mother. The sinister goings-on in the woods seem at first to be an unrelated storyline, but the mystery became more intriguing as the connections were made. I enjoyed the story for Isabel's growing independence and courage, and for how the love story between her and the suitor she chooses develops. There is a suspense element, and the potential dangers to the characters are physical and social, and it was interesting to see how the different characters responded. I was a little disappointed at the end, with a sudden jump from a chapter with a declaration of love and a marriage proposal to an epilogue type of chapter in which Isabel has been married for some weeks or months. Without spoiling the ending, I do think that it left a few questions unanswered. I would have liked to have known more details, but that said, it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story to have some of those left to my own imagination!

I read the previous Treasures of Surrey novel, The Curiosity Keeper, so I was familiar with the setting of Fellsworth School, and was looking for some familiar characters as well. The major characters from that first novel do not make an appearance here though, so this book can certainly be enjoyed as a stand-alone novel, and they do not need to be read in order.
