It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

This weekly reading list meme is hosted at Book Date. Join in to see what others are reading and maybe get some ideas of what to read next!

I finished reading . . .

A Treacherous Curse (A Veronica Speedwell Mystery) by Deanna Reybourn - Intrepid duo Veronica and Stoker must solve a mysterious disappearance and put the threat of an ancient Egyptian curse to rest. (Read my full review HERE.)

I'm currently reading . . .

As Death Draws Near (A Lady Darby Mystery) by Anna Lee Huber - I'll soon be finished this one - Kiera and Gage are very close to solving the mysterious murders of Irish nuns, but they may be in danger as well.

Delilah: Treacherous Beauty by Angela Hunt - started the first few chapters of this novel based on the Philistine woman mentioned in the Bible.

No Less Days by Amanda G. Stevens - I'm already captivated by this contemporary fantasy about a man who cannot die and his search for purpose. (You can get a free preview on Amazon if you'd like to see if it captures your attention too!)

Next on the stack... these three, plus at least one more review book on its way to me.

The Accidental Guardian by Mary Connealy
The Captured Bride: Daughters of the Mayflower - book 3 by Michelle Griep
Praise Habit: Finding God in Sunsets and Sushi (Experiencing God) by David Crowder

Recent Reads - A Treacherous Curse

This post contains affiliate links.

A Treacherous Curse (A Veronica Speedwell Mystery) by Deanna Reybourn - The delightfully unusual partners Veronica and Stoker are drawn into another investigation when a member of an Egyptian expedition team goes missing under very strange circumstances. John de Morgan's disappearance is just an interesting tidbit of news until Special Branch asks Veronica and Stoker to look into it. And they have little choice, because Stoker seems to be the only enemy John de Morgan had, and it's only a matter of time until he is suspected of murder. Veronica is rather surprised to learn that Stoker was married to Caroline before she abandoned him to become Mrs de Morgan.

Thrust into the investigation in this way, Veronica boldly defends and supports Stoker even when facing down Caroline and her family. Veronica and Stoker gain invitations to meet the members of the Tiverton expedition, Sir Leicester and his family and associates, and get to work tracking down information on the hotel where the de Morgans stayed the night John disappeared, where Veronica's cool head and stubborn attitude helps them both escape death. They also hunt for details about the expedition, especially the ancient curse rumored to be attached to the expedition, and work to discern motives and deceit.

The bond between Veronica and Stoker grows stronger as they must defend and protect each other, ferret out the truth, and see justice done for both the guilty and innocent in this conspiracy gone horribly wrong. As usual, my attention was riveted and I enjoyed every bit of this entertaining mystery with its eclectic cast of characters, full of witty dialogue and quirky adventures.

And also as usual, I will remind readers that Veronica and many of the other characters are not the stereotypical Victorian-era prudes. In fact, the opening pages of this particular novel find Veronica cataloging some new additions to the collection of artifacts for the museum - models of *ahem* human anatomical features. Not graphic, but quite suggestive, and quite inappropriate (in my opinion) for my teenage daughter, at any rate. However, it's only the first half dozen pages or so that are questionable in that regard. But fair warning to sensitive readers is in order.

This book is a Mystery or Thriller for the Full House Reading Challenge 2018 hosted by The Book Date; and a book by a favorite author for the 2018 Reading Challenge at Modern Mrs. Darcy.

Scripture and a Snapshot - A Prayer for Mothers

photo credit: Kat - Used by permission.

With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your every deed prompted by faith. We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ.

~II Thessalonians 1:11-12~

I think of this as a prayer for all the moms I know, and also as the prayer of moms for their children and loved ones.

Happy Mother's Day!

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

This weekly reading list meme is hosted at Book Date. Join in to see what others are reading and maybe get some ideas of what to read next!

It's been a very busy few weeks, with lots happening in my life and on my homeschool blog, Homeschool Coffee Break, so I've skipped a couple of weekly reading summary posts. Things have been quiet on this blog, and I haven't had much time for reading either. Here's three weeks worth of What I'm Reading!

I finished reading . . .

In Places Hidden (Golden Gate Secrets) by Tracie Peterson - Camri travels to San Francisco to find her missing brother. She makes new friends and find romance during her search, which takes her to some of the darker parts of San Francisco. (Read my full review HERE.)

I'm currently reading . . .

As Death Draws Near (A Lady Darby Mystery) by Anna Lee Huber - Kiera and Gage investigate the murder of a young Catholic nun in Ireland. Can they find the killer before there are more tragedies?

A Treacherous Curse (A Veronica Speedwell Mystery) by Deanna Reybourn - Veronica Speedwell and her friend and associate Stoker are back and determined to solve a mysterious disappearance before Stoker is accused of foul play.

Downsizing The Family Home: What to Save, What to Let Go by Marni Jameson - some practical advice for downsizing. Hoping that I can reduce the amount of stuff in my house!

Delilah: Treacherous Beauty by Angela Hunt - just barely started this novel based on the Philistine woman mentioned in the Bible.

Next on the stack... a couple more review books are coming soon, and I hope to start this one soon too:

Praise Habit: Finding God in Sunsets and Sushi (Experiencing God) by David Crowder

Scripture and a Snapshot - He Lifted Me Out

I waited patiently for the LORD;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock,
and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the LORD
and put their trust in him.

~Psalm 40:1-3~
