What I'm Reading - June 14, 2021

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Just A Second helps supply books and coffee.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

This weekly reading list meme is hosted at Book Date. Join in to see what others are reading and maybe get some ideas of what to read next! Although the Book Date link-up happens weekly, I don't manage to post that often. I aim to post and link about once a month, although I sometimes link up my monthly summary as well.

I've found a little more time to read recently, and have been trying to wrap up and catch up on some of the books I've been working on or wanting to read for a long time.

I finished reading . . .

Daughters of Zion: Biblical Retellings by C.A. Gray - A collection of short stories and background information about women mentioned in the Bible. Some really great insights and perspectives on well-known - and not so well-known women in the Bible. (Read my full review HERE)

The Anatomist's Wife by Anna Lee Huber - The first Lady Darby mystery, in which portrait artist Kiera, the widow of an anatomist, assists the investigator Sebastian Gage in solving a murder. (Read my full review HERE)

Feed the Birds: Attract and Identify 196 Common North American Birds by Chris Earley - A beautiful guidebook for attracting, feeding, and identifying backyard birds. (Read my full review HERE)

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien - I was slow to get my review of this classic Hero's Journey tale written. Loved re-reading the story of Bilbo Baggins and his adventures with a company of dwarves. (Read my full review HERE)

Heart of a Runaway Girl by Trevor Wiltzen - Diner owner Mabel becomes a part-time investigator when she's convinced that the wrong person was arrested after a violent murder. (Read my full review HERE)

I'm currently reading . . .

Mortal Arts by Anna Lee Huber - I'm having a little trouble keeping up, but I am re-reading this series along with many other fans and the author as we 'count down' to the release of the next Lady Darby novel. (Find the Lady Darby Read-Along group on Facebook if you're interested.) This is the second in the series, in which Kiera tries to help a family friend who has been trying to readjust after being in an insane asylum for many years, and to do that she and Gage must find out what happened to a young woman that has gone missing.

Beekeeping: A Handbook on Honey, Hives & Helping the Bees by Joachim Petterson - I've been browsing this guidebook for beginning beekeepers in spare moments. I'd read enough of it to sum it up for my May book club, but haven't reviewed it here yet. Will get that summary posted here soon!

The Inviting Life by Laura Calder - I finally received this book from the library that was supposed to be part of my May theme reading! I've just started it - it's about hospitality and includes practical tips for things like spring cleaning.

Next on the stack...

Between the Wild Branches by Connilyn Cossette
The Beachcomber's Companion by Anna Marlis Burgard
A Grave Matter - Anna Lee Huber

What I'm Highlighting . . . Along with a few blogging friends, I'm participating in an Online Book Club that is a little different. Instead of all reading the same title, we'll be reading books that have a theme in common. That way readers of all ages, homeschoolers or not, can participate. Our theme for June is Beaches. Stop by HS Coffee Break to find out more.

Scripture and a Snapshot - A New Heart and a New Life

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
~Galatians 2:20~

Just as God promised in the Old Testament:

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.
~Ezekiel 36:26-27~

Our daughter graduated from the community college with her Associate of Fine Arts in Music. Next up - transferring to university to finish her studies, and then, to quote the mortarboard and one of her favorite bands, "Next up forever!" and whatever it holds!

Recent Reads - Heart of a Runaway Girl

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Just A Second helps supply books and coffee.

Heart of a Runaway Girl by Trevor Wiltzen - Mabel Davison owns the motel and diner in a sleepy little mountain town with only a mine and a sawmill for industry. She's a single mom with a big heart and a gift for reading people, so she takes notice of a young couple one day - they seem to be arguing but not angry with each other, and the young woman is obviously very upset about something. Later Mabel hears the young woman was brutally murdered - and that the young man was arrested. She recognizes the young man, Winston, as one of the local pot dealers, but isn't convinced he would be a murderer. Winston is black, and the town has a large racist element, so Mabel even has to step in to get the state police involved when the white supremacists show up at the jail intent on a lynching!

Mabel visits Winston at the state prison and is convinced that he didn't murder the girl. With some unwitting and some reluctant help from the sheriff, Mabel sets out to find some real evidence that will lead to the real killer. With only her determination and her instinct to lead her, she gets into one scrape after another, and all the while she must also protect her two young sons from danger.

The racist drug lord of the town, Larson, is none too pleased with Mabel's meddling, and his warnings become more pointed as Mabel continues with her investigation. Despite the danger, Mabel realizes that things will never get better for her, or for her boys or anyone else, in her town unless Larson is challenged.

Mabel is a homey, warm-hearted character who wants what is best for her kids and wants fairness and justice for the people of her town. She offers hospitality and a sense of family to those who come to her diner, and is ready with some sass and momma-bear attitude when needed too. As the viewpoint character, her observations about life and the people of a rather dead-end town are both pointed and poignant at times. She carries the reader along in her quest to find the real killer, and the social issues (racism, drug abuse, crime and justice, broken families) that form the backdrop to the mystery are relevant in today's world even though the 1980s setting has a nostalgic feel.

The writing is very good and the characters are believable and balanced. There are a couple of unintentional viewpoint character shifts but overall an impressive debut. I'm not sure the title is a good representation of the story itself, but the setting and the characters are the real deal! It looks like this is the first of a series, and I'm looking forward to reading more about Mabel and the town of Blue River.

From the publisher:

In a 1980s mountain town fueled by the drug trade, a young couple gets into an argument at Mabel's Diner. Then the teen girl winds up brutally murdered, and the black boyfriend automatically jailed. Haunted by the tragedy, big-hearted, big-haired, single mom and waitress, Mabel Davison steps in and asks questions few want answered. But she's unprepared for the secrets she uncovers, and now more lives may be destroyed. including her own.

Get your small-town mystery with a twist today. Fans of original, character-driven investigative mysteries love it.

Scripture and a Snapshot - Our Father in Heaven

Pray then like this:
"Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

~Matthew 6:9-13~

Recent Reads - The Hobbit

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Just A Second helps supply books and coffee.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien - Well, who isn't familiar with the classic story of Bilbo Baggins and how the wizard Gandalf got him to join a company of dwarves on an epic adventure to win back the dwarves' gold? It's a story that most students know, thanks to the movie, but it turns out not many students have read the book. This was the novel our high school literature class read to end the year, and it's a perfect choice to illustrate the Hero's Journey plot.

We meet the hobbit, Bilbo, in his comfortable home - a hobbit-hole - and his quiet, comfortable life. Until Gandalf the wizard selects Bilbo as the burglar needed to accompany Thorin Oakenshield and the dwarves on a mission to The Lonely Mountain to reclaim their gold from the dragon Smaug. No wonder Bilbo initially refuses the Call to Adventure! Of course he does go on this Hero's Journey after all, with Gandalf as the mentor and the dwarves as traveling companions.

They soon encounter hardships - trolls and goblins, dark and dangerous caves, and mysterious forests. Bilbo matches wits with the creature Gollum and gains a reward - a magic ring that turns the wearer invisible. This ring proves invaluable when the dwarves are captured by the wood-elves, as Bilbo's luck and cleverness combine to keep him from being captured. He is able to free his friends and they continue their journey to the Lonely Mountain.

Bilbo faces the dragon Smaug and manages to do some burgling, but when Thorin sees the treasure, he is soon overcome by the dragon-sickness which puts the entire company in danger once again. Smaug takes out his anger on the village of Lake Town, but is killed by one of the men. The men of Lake Town and the wood-elves come up to the mountain to claim what they think is their fair share of the dragon's hoard, and Thorin's greed leads to a tense standoff before Bilbo once again saves the day.

In addition to the Hero's Journey elements to the plot, The Hobbit also provided excellent examples of motifs, figurative language, and an empathetic lead in Bilbo himself. An entertaining and exciting classic that appeals to all ages, and never disappoints.

I read this novel and studied it along with students in my high school literature co-op class. We learned about the hero's journey plot and how Bilbo's adventures followed that pattern. We also discussed Tolkien's use of elements reminiscent of epic tales.

Our discussion and study was guided by the textbook Illuminating Literature: Characters in Crisis from Writing with Sharon Watson.
