Recent Reads - High-Wire Heartbreak

High-Wire Heartbreak by Anna Schmidt - Chloe Whitfield is a successful mystery novelist, but she needs inspiration for her upcoming book which will be set at Ca' d'Zan, the Florida home of John Ringling. She's arranged to stay at the estate while it's being renovated so she can do research on the history and setting - it's important to her to get all the details right. She has no intention of allowing anything personal into her novel, but she does have a personal interest in the Ringling circus. Her great-grandmother, Lucinda Conroy, was a trapeze artist in the circus, but she seemed to have disappeared. All Chloe knows is that her Grandma Alice was Lucy's only child, and Alice was raised in an orphanage before being adopted by a couple from New Jersey.

Chloe's passing interest in Lucy intensifies when she notices a poster showing Lucy performed at Ringling's private birthday gala at Ca' d'Zan. A little more digging turned up a newspaper article reporting that she was accused of stealing that evening and was arrested. With help from the estate's historian, Dr. Ian Flanner, and a couple other young staffers, Chloe gathers information for her novel and follows Lucy's trail as well. And along the way, Chloe and Ian get closer.

In alternating chapters, the reader is taken back to the 1930s to follow Lucy's story. At the pinnacle of her performing career, she discovers she's been duped by the man she thought was her husband. Now she's pregnant and alone, and unsure where to turn. When she's framed for a theft, her trapeze partner comes to her rescue and the two of them come up with a bold plan to help her evade arrest and have her baby. She plans to bring up her child herself despite her circumstances and health concerns, but what if her true identity is revealed?

It took me a few chapters to warm up to Chloe, but I liked her more as she learned about Ca' d'Zan and her great-grandmother; and got more invested in the friendships she's building with Ian and her assistant. I felt that Chloe was a bit flat as a character, but Lucy was much more well-developed. There were some interesting and unexpected twists in both storylines and I enjoyed both.

From the Publisher:

In 1936--A party at the Ringling mansion Ca d'Zan in Sarasota, Florida, leads to a robbery--and possibly death.

A successful historical mystery writer, Chloe Whitfield comes to Ca' d'Zan to research her next novel. Chloe's fascination with the circus is rooted in family stories of her great-grandmother Lucinda Conroy, who reportedly was a trapeze artist of some renown. She's heard hints of scandal - and perhaps larceny, but no details.

Chloe's grandmother - rumored to be Lucinda's only offspring - was raised in an orphanage and never knew her mother. Intrigued as she is, Chloe has no intent of writing about Lucinda until she sees a poster featuring Lucinda as the star performer for a 70th birthday gala for John Ringling in May of 1936. From there the trail goes cold.

Who was Lucinda and what happened to her?

What I'm Reading - January 17, 2022

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Just A Second helps supply books and coffee.

It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

This weekly reading list meme is hosted at Book Date. Join in to see what others are reading and maybe get some ideas of what to read next! Although the Book Date link-up happens weekly, I don't manage to post that often. I aim to post and link about once a month, although I sometimes link up my monthly summary as well.

I have tons of excuses for not getting much reading done recently, but I won't get into those here!

I finished reading . . .

As Death Draws Near by Anna Lee Huber - Kiera and Gage are called to Ireland to investigate a murder, and just as one of the nuns at the abbey decides to share information, she is found murdered as well. (I'm way behind in the Lady Darby Read-Along group on Facebook!) (Read my full review HERE)

High-Wire Heartbreak by Anna Schmidt - a novelist visits the Ringling mansion to do research for a mystery she's writing, and gets caught up researching the story of her great-grandmother who had been a trapeze artist for Ringling but seemed to have disappeared. (Read my full review HERE - coming later today!)

I'm currently reading . . .

A Brush with Shadows (A Lady Darby Mystery) by Anna Lee Huber - Kiera returns with Gage to his family home to help locate his cousin who has gone missing under mysterious circumstances.

Atomic Habits by James Clear - still working on this book about developing productive habits. I'm taking it slow so I can start doing some of the things it suggests.

The End of the Magi by Patrick W. Carr - A young magi acolyte flees Babylon during political turmoil and winds up on an epic journey to find a prophesied king.

Next on the stack...

An Unexpected Peril by Deanna Raybourn
All That's Fair by Amanda G. Stevens
Raincoats & Sunglasses by Caroline Johnston

What I'm Highlighting . . . I've decided to participate in a couple of organized reading challenges this year. Will do my best to read books representing different countries of Europe, and to read a bunch of the books I've got stacking up in my TBR piles at home. See more at: 2022 Reading Challenges

Scripture and a Snapshot - Flourish

Not to us, LORD, not to us
but to your name be the glory,
because of your love and faithfulness.

The LORD remembers us and will bless us:
He will bless his people Israel,
he will bless the house of Aaron,
he will bless those who fear the LORD --
small and great alike.

May the LORD cause you to flourish,
both you and your children.
May you be blessed by the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

The highest heavens belong to the LORD,
but the earth he has given to mankind.

Praise the LORD.

~Psalm 115:1, 12-16~

2022 Reading Challenges

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Just A Second helps supply books and coffee.

The last couple of years I didn't do any specific reading challenges, just kept track for my own interest. My book totals have gone down somewhat, and that surprised me. Well, this year I'm going to try a couple of specific challenges - the kind I'll keep myself accountable for! Both are hosted by Gillion at Rose City Reader, so I will combine those in this anchor post.

First is the 2022 European Reading Challenge! For this challenge, participants will be reading books either set in Europe or by European authors. My first thought was that, sure, I could read five books representing different countries (Five Star Deluxe Entourage level) but then I reminded myself that I haven't read as much as usual the last couple of years, and with some uncertainty about whether we might move soon and all of that . . . I've decided I will try the Four Star (Honeymooner) level participation. My goal will be to read four books set in four different European countries, or by authors from four different countries.

THE GIST: The idea is to read books set in European countries or books by European authors. The books can be of any genre - fiction, nonfiction, novels, short stories, memoirs, travel guides, cookbooks, biography, poetry, whatever. You can participate at different levels, but each book must represent a different country - either written by an author from a different country or set in a different country, no two books from the same country. It's supposed to be a tour!

***************

The TBR 22 in '22 Challenge is meant to encourage us to read the books already on our shelves (including eReader shelves) and maybe make room for more! I have a lot of books on shelves, in boxes, and in the library of my Kindle that I haven't read yet, despite all my good intentions. Many of them I'm quite willing to pass on to others, but I don't feel right about doing that if I haven't even tried to read them! So it seems like a good idea to read before I purge.

"TBR" counts as any book that was on your shelf prior to January 1, 2022. "Shelf" includes your ebook reader and audiobooks you own, but it doesn't include library books. This is a TBR challenge, so the goal is to read the books you own to make room for more books.

A couple of fun things I started doing last year, and will continue - I keep track of the titles I read in an "Alphabet Soup" challenge, to see how many letters of the alphabet I can represent. I also try to participate weekly in what I call the Friday Fun posts. These are First Line Fridays, hosted by Reading is My SuperPower; Book Beginnings on Fridays, hosted by Rose City Reader; and the Friday 56, hosted by Freda's Voice. And I plan to continue occasional bookshelf summaries, shared with Book Date.

Happy Reading!

Scripture and a Snapshot - Petitions, Prayers, Intercession

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.

Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing.

~I Timothy 2:1-6, 8~

After a couple weeks break for the holidays, I'm back to share some teasers. I need to get going on this book, because I'd intended to post my review this week, but it's not ready yet.

"Thanks again," she called when Tilda finally took the hint and headed down the path.
"I'll check on you later," Tilda shouted above the rain.
Chloe waved and shut the door.
At last. Now, where was I? Oh, yes. Funeral or party?

Walk through Doors to the Past via a series of historical stories of romance and adventure.

Sweat beaded Chloe Whitfield's forehead and soaked her neck. Her loose-fitting shift-style dress was a mass of wrinkles. Who had ever thought linen was a good idea for clothing? She'd chosen her outfit with the thought of wanting to present herself as the professional and successful woman she was.

But why had she bothered?

*It's Book Beginnings on Fridays! Time to gather with our fellow book lovers and share the opening sentence (or so) of the books we are reading this week. Or share from a book that is on your mind right now -- whatever catches your fancy.

New Year Scripture and a Snapshot - Encourage One Another

Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that they day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You all are children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. so then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. He died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

~ I Thessalonians 5:1-11 ~

Happy New Year!
