Scripture and a Snapshot - January 31, 2015

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Violet gave me a narrow look. No doubt she wondered if I'd lied to her at SugarWerks or if I was lying now, but I would have died thrice over before admitting that Marcus had been the one to almost kill me, that his body pressed to mine and the heat between us had been enough to stop my heart. His gray eyes were on me as I tightened the mainspring. The muscles in my chest constricted under the combined pressure.
I am more than a pretty little windup doll.

I finally got started on two books that have been on my TBR list for quite awhile. First up is Ticker by Lisa Mantchev. It had me from the opening sentence:

A girl with a clockwork heart shouldn't be running late, but I was.
But here are the teasers:

Somewhere deep inside him still dwelled the caring surgeon and gentle man I'd known, but the blood of more than twenty people stained his hands, people he'd kidnapped off the streets of Bazalgate and experimented upon, testing different clockwork ventriculators...
All to save me.

Alec was glad to have a way to support his family that didn't involve dirty manual labor -- that relief was genuine enough. Yet he had his reservations about working for the woman who had single-handedly laid waste his career and plans for the future.
At least for the present.

"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock."

The men on deck rushed to the rails to get a look, but they were subdued now, their task emptied of some of its fun by the earnestness of the young man they had sent deep into the murky waters below them. Several of them hoped aloud he'd make it. The sailors walked the lines backward, hand-over-hand past the ratlines and rigging, over the cannon and cannonballs, toward the stern of the ship, where they would fish Packer, or his body, from the brine.
