Bookshelf Review - November 2017

November's Books Completed and Reviewed

A Dangerous Legacy by Elizabeth Camden - Lucy Drake gets some help from rival Colin Beckwith in the fight she and her brother have been in over their rightful inheritance. They have to overcome the odds and their different backgrounds and hopes for the future before their romance has a chance. (Read my full review HERE.)
"I think everyone is rooting for the poor relations to win that lawsuit."As was Colin. Having learned a little about how the Saratoga Drakes did business, he would lose no sleep over Lucy's illegal wire. In return, she would bury the gossip about him.

31 Proverbs to Light Your Path by Liz Curtis Higgs - A practical and encouraging devotional. A more thorough review will appear later. (Read my brief review HERE.)
My goal is not to show you how to be good. My goal is to show you how good God is.

During November I continued reading:

Isaiah's Daughter: A Novel of Prophets and Kings by Mesu Andrews - I set this one aside for a little while because I would like to finish it a little closer to the release date, and time my review accordingly. (I am reading the ARC)
I stared at Prince Hezekiah and wasn't sure whether to be offended or proud that he would address Yahweh's prophet with such assurance. Where had he learned about lights and paths and the lost?

During November I started reading:

The Sound of Rain by Sarah Loudin Thomas - After surviving a mine cave-in in West Virginia, Judd moves to Myrtle Beach where he starts a new job and meets Larkin Heyward, the owner's daughter. Trouble is, Larkin wants desperately to go to Appalachia and help the poor. If they have a future together, where will they live?
He thought George Heyward might have noticed how friendly Larkin had been, although he hadn't put as much distance between the two of them as Judd would have expected. He figured Mr. Heyward was the sort to think Judd was good enough to keep the forestry commission happy but not good enough to try to do the same for his daughter.

India Black (A Madam of Espionage Mystery) by Carol K. Carr - This was on my wish list for a long time before I remembered and started it. A London madam is drawn into espionage and intrigue when a War Office minister dies while in her establishment.
"So you see, Miss Black," Dizzy went on, "the very future of England depends upon the retrieval of that missing case. Find the case, and we may prevent Russia from marching into Constantinople."

Coming Up in December!

Adored: 365 Devotions for Young Women (A FlyBy Review and Giveaway)

This post contains affiliate links.

Adored: 365 Devotions for Young Women from Zondervan - If you are looking for an encouraging gift for a teen girl, this beautiful devotional book might be just the thing. I've been looking through it and plan to pass it along to my daughter, and hope it will be a blessing to her.

The Introduction sets the stage with a discussion of the many ways we use the word love in the English language, and then the bold assurance that God loves each of us. In fact, he adores us and delights in us. As the title indicates, there are a total of 365 one-page devotions in the book. Each has a Scripture, a short devotional, and a space to do a brief journal entry. Although there's a devotional for each day of the year, they don't need to be done in order or on specific days. The topics addressed in the devotions range from truth, God's faithfulness, wisdom, and growing in faith - to tears, friendships, jealousy, and celebrating accomplishments. The devotions are honest and sometimes challenging, but not preachy.

Recent Reads - 31 Proverbs to Light Your Path

This post contains affiliate links.

31 Proverbs to Light Your Path by Liz Curtis Higgs - In this devotional book, best-selling author Liz Curtis Higgs delves into thirty-one proverbs and explores the deeper meanings. The proverbs featured in the book were chosen by hundreds of women as their favorites, and each one reveals truth and wisdom. The proverbs are examined word by word, using several translations and paraphrases; and Higgs tells her own honest stories of struggles and victories in trusting God's promises and wisdom. Each chapter is quite brief, and is followed by a short suggested prayer and a "One Minute, One Step" challenge. These are meant to be done immediately, and are simple tasks that don't require much time or preparation, and help you take action in applying God's Word right away. There is also a study guide at the end of the book so this could also be used as a small group study.

This is just a brief review - I will share my full review here after it has been published at The Old Schoolhouse Magazine website.

This post contains affiliate links.
It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

This weekly reading list meme is hosted at Book Date. Join in to see what others are reading and maybe get some ideas of what to read next! I missed posting last Monday and during the past week we were on a little Thanksgiving vacation so I'm playing a bit of catch-up.

I finished reading . . .

31 Proverbs to Light Your Path by Liz Curtis Higgs - A brief review will be coming soon, and the full review will be posted after it's been published at The Old Schoolhouse website.

I'm currently reading . . .

The Sound of Rain by Sarah Loudin Thomas - Review for this one should be coming soon, as I'm almost finished. It's such a good read!

Isaiah's Daughter: A Novel of Prophets and Kings by Mesu Andrews - Loving this one as well, although I didn't spend much time with it this past week, while we were on vacation.

India Black (A Madam of Espionage Mystery) by Carol K. Carr - was really hooked on this the previous week, but didn't get much time with it this past week. Will get back to it in earnest as soon as I'm finished one of the others.

Next on the stack...

French Women Don't Get Fat: The Secret of Eating for Pleasure by Mireille Guiliano
When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor . . . and Yourself by Steve Corbett & Brian Fikkert
An Awakened Heart (Orphan Train): An Orphan Train Novella - Jody Hedlund (this novella is currently free for Kindle)
