Monthly Bookshelf Review - August 2019

I see stuff about beach reads and people doing extra reading in the summer, but it rarely works that way for me. It's been a challenge to find time to devote to reading over the past month or so. Coming up in the new school year I'll be teaching a Literature class in our co-op, so I have a feeling I'll face even more challenges in keeping up with my reading list!

August's Books Completed and Reviewed

Unshakeable: A Story of Unwavering Faith and Conviction by Elizabeth Wiens - I reviewed this novel for The Old Schoolhouse website. It's a novel about a small group of families that continue to homeschool even after the provincial government makes it illegal to do so.  (Read my full review HERE)

An Artless Demise (A Lady Darby Mystery) by Anna Lee Huber - Kiera and Gage race to find out who is murdering young society men and making it look like the work of resurrectionists. (Read my full review HERE)

The Yellow Lantern: True Colors: Historical Stories of American Crime by Angie Dicken - A young woman is forced to act as a spy and watchman for grave robbers and feels trapped into choosing between loyalty to her father or to the manager of the cotton mill where she works. (Read my full review HERE)

During August I started reading:

A Study In Scarlet Women (The Lady Sherlock Series) by Sherry Thomas - Charlotte Holmes searches for the true criminals after she and her family fall under suspicion.

Britfield & the Lost Crown by C.R. Stewart - two orphans, Tom and Sarah, escape from an awful orphanage on an epic race across England to find out whether Tom's family is still alive.

During August I shelved:

The Year of Living Danishly: Uncovering the Secrets of the World's Happiest Country by Helen Russell - Trying to decide whether I'll pick this back up. It's interesting, but not as much as I expected, and I just have so many other things I need to read.

Coming Up in September!

Immanuel Labor: God's Presence in Our Profession by Russell E. Gehrlein
The Butterfly Recluse by Therese Heckencamp
Pudd'nhead Wilson by Mark Twain

  2. You had a good month!! Summer is a slow reading time for me because of being busy. I only read 2 books this month :(

  3. My reading slowed down this summer too but I was able to finish 10 books this month which was what I was reading before summer. Maybe some of the books you need to read can fit into your literature course so you can kill 2 birds with one stone.

  4. Sometimes it is hard to find time to read and really its more important that the times you can find to read you do enjoy it with the time you have. Well I reckon anyway! I am interested in the Sherry Thomas book, its the one I'd read off your list here.

  5. I was having hat same problem for May though July myself. I wanted to read but had some challenges to say the least. I finally was able to get back to reading this past month. Not a lot more but a bit more. I think I had more busy days or had things up for me to deal with other then Wedding stuff and medical stuff. I hope you can get more done this coming month. Enjoy. https://nrcbooks.blogspot.com/2019/08/monthly-wrap-up-august-2019.html

  7. At least you'll be getting some reading done with your literature class (I assume). Hopefully reading and discussing with your class will fill the void since you won't have time for much pleasure reading!

  8. I'm not a "beach" reads type of person either. I prefer fiction that dives deeply into issues and relationships and makes me think about my world differently. The books you listed here seem to be those kinds of books.
