Monthly Bookshelf Review - July 2020

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Just A Second helps supply books and coffee.

Despite lofty intentions, I usually don't get a lot of reading done during the summer. Somehow it just takes much longer to finish books. During July I completed only one, but I do have another that will be finished pretty soon.

July's Books Completed and Reviewed

Ruby Moon by Jenny Knipfer - A young French-Ojibwe woman copes with growing up amid grief and conflict, and also has to find her way through a tragedy that threatens to bury her in shame and guilt. (Read my full review HERE)

During July I started reading:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte - I decided to try and get back into the online book discussion group I joined, but I don't think I'll be able to finish our current selection before it's time to discuss it! I'm doing my best, and I have read and enjoyed this classic before.

During July I continued reading:

The Girl With the Louding Voice by Abi Dare - Adunni is a young Nigerian girl who wants an education more than anything. She has little control though, as her father gives her as a bride to an old man, then a tragedy forces her to flee her village, and she winds up in Lagos with nothing more than a sliver of hope that things will get better.

The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa - A stray cat finds a home with a young man and travels with him to visit his longtime friends. A bittersweet memoir told mostly from the cat's point of view.

 During July I shelved:

Church With No Walls by Noah Cleveland - I keep working on this and then needing to set it aside, and I feel like I'd better set it aside and try again in a couple weeks. It's not a tough read, but I want to give the challenges in it the attention they deserve.

Coming Up in August!

Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson
Claiming Mariah by Pam Hillman
When Silence Sings by Sarah Loudin Thomas

Scripture and a Snapshot - Seeds

"Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me."

~John 12:24-26~

Share Four Somethings - July 2020

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Just A Second helps supply books and coffee.

What a strange summer this is turning out to be! The available choices for activities and vacations seem so limited, and few of those options seem very appealing. When it's uncomfortably hot or humid, or both, it's even more uncomfortable when we are made to wear face coverings. It's even a challenge to look forward to events upcoming because there's always the threat that the state will force a cancellation or go back to the stricter lockdown again. We've been doing our best to live well and stay positive, but the frustrations can weigh on us at times.

Something Loved

I finally got a Shopping List app for my phone and I don't know why I didn't look for one earlier. It's made shopping so much easier! I know there are all kinds of shopping list apps to choose from, and the one I chose is very simple and flexible. No more stopping at the grocery store on my way home from work or wherever only to realize my shopping list is still stuck to the fridge at home! I always have my phone with me, so I always have the list. I've already developed the habit of adding things to the list on my phone as soon as I see we're running low on something. Simple life hack that has really helped me organize just a little bit!

Something Read

This has been a slow reading month. So far I've completed and reviewed only one book in July. I have several I'm working on, including one I must finish by the end of the month, so I need to get moving on that! I will include that book here, because I hope to make my deadline! You can see more about my reading in my Monthly Bookshelf Review for July 2020, which will be posted shortly.

Something Treasured

Getting older isn't always seen as something to treasure. I delight in seeing my kids getting so grown up and being independent (yes, some of mine still live at home), but there's also a part of me that wants to keep them close. So yes, as they move out and live their own lives, I hope they don't go too far away.

But here's what I'm treasuring - and learning to treasure - more these days. The freedom that comes along with being empty nesters. Because the kids are independent and can do their own thing, my husband and I don't have to look out for them. We can do our own thing too! Earlier this month, the kids were all away on a lake trip with their friends, which meant that hubby and I had a quiet week by ourselves at home. I went to the grocery store ONE time the whole week and that was enough! I had the house to myself during the daytimes. Hubby could watch TV whenever he felt like it because nobody else was in the living room. We went out for dinner a couple of times - once by ourselves and once with friends.

Something Ahead

My husband and I will celebrate another anniversary at the beginning of August, so we've planned a long weekend trip in honor of the occasion. We have a small cabin booked near a quiet state park and we're looking forward to exploring some new destinations, and enjoying a mix of adventure and relaxation for a few days. We had been hoping for another longer trip too, perhaps in September, but with things so unsettled we haven't booked anything yet.

Scripture and a Snapshot - Free Indeed

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

~John 8:31-32, 36~

Connect Five Friday - Novels of the Exodus

This post contains affiliate links - using affiliate links from Just A Second helps supply books and coffee.

The Friday Five Link Up is a List Link Up hosted by The Book Date. It can be five connections of any kind. Books can have been read last year or any year. Books can be used more than once. They may not have been read yet. . . It can be as simple or as complicated as you like. Maybe it's not a list of actual books, but things connected to books - e.g. favourite book shops, recipes etc. It might even be five movies related to books or five poems or five poets or five bookish moments, five thoughts about reading - be creative! The link-up will be open each Friday and will close on Thursday. Use the hashtag #connect5books

It's been awhile since I've done one of these, and I've been wanting to but just haven't managed to get myself organized quite well enough on Fridays. I had a bit of time to plan ahead this time. Here are five novels (or series) that focus on the Exodus of the Hebrews out of Egypt.

Counted With the Stars (Out From Egypt) by Connilyn Cossette (and the rest of the Out From Egypt series) - The first novel in this series tells of the plagues that led up to the exodus from a rather unusual point of view. Kiya is an Egyptian sold into slavery and trying to protect her mother and her disabled brother. While enduring the plagues, she meets a Hebrew slave named Shira and her curiosity about the God of the Hebrews grows until she decides to believe what Shira says about the plague to come next - the one that will kill all the firstborns. She joins the Hebrews in hopes of saving her brother and escaping slavery. (Read my full review HERE.)

The next two novels in the series are Shadow of the Storm (Out From Egypt) and Wings of the Wind (Out From Egypt). Shadow tells Shira's story (my review is HERE) and Wings introduces the characters Alanah and Moriyah, whose adventures provide a bridge to the next novel series. (My full review is HERE.)

***************
Miriam: A Treasures of the Nile Novel by Mesu Andrews - A historical novel of the Biblical character Miriam that tells the story of Moses' sister starting about the time Moses returns from exile. At the time Miriam about in her eighties, so it's a bit unusual to have a heroine that age! Miriam is a prophetess in her own right, and a leader among the people, but she struggles in finding her new role when Moses and Aaron rise to prominent leadership and the Hebrews leave Egypt. (Read my full review HERE)

The Pharaoh's Daughter: A Treasures of the Nile Novel by Mesu Andrews tells the story of the Egyptian princess who rescued baby Moses and was his adoptive mother. (Read my full review HERE)

***************

Slender Reeds: Jochebed's Hope by Texie Susan Gregory tells the story of Moses' birth mother, Jochebed. This novel imagines how young Jochebed grows in her faith and learns to trust God through the very dark and difficult experiences of life. (Read my full review HERE.)

***************
The Priest: Aaron (Sons of Encouragement Book 1) by Francine Rivers is part of a series I read many years ago and really enjoyed. It's a short novel that tells the events of the Exodus - including the infamous golden calf - from the point of view of Moses' brother Aaron. (My brief review is HERE.)

***************

Dreamers (Legacies of the Ancient River Book 1) by Angela Hunt is on my to-read list. I've enjoyed quite a few of Hunt's other books, and this one tells about a young slave girl in Egypt who becomes acquainted with a Hebrew slave named Joseph. This same Joseph eventually rises to power in Egypt after interpreting Pharoah's dreams. The second book in the series is called Brothers and it takes up the story of Joseph's brothers back in Canaan and their journeys to Egypt in search of food during the famine. And the third, Journey, jumps to Joseph's two sons and the blessings given them by the patriarch Jacob. It's this migration of Jacob and all his sons into Egypt that puts the Hebrews in the position of becoming slaves, and eventually leads up to the Exodus.
