Monthly Bookshelf Review - July 2020

Despite lofty intentions, I usually don't get a lot of reading done during the summer. Somehow it just takes much longer to finish books. During July I completed only one, but I do have another that will be finished pretty soon.

July's Books Completed and Reviewed

Ruby Moon by Jenny Knipfer - A young French-Ojibwe woman copes with growing up amid grief and conflict, and also has to find her way through a tragedy that threatens to bury her in shame and guilt. (Read my full review HERE)

During July I started reading:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte - I decided to try and get back into the online book discussion group I joined, but I don't think I'll be able to finish our current selection before it's time to discuss it! I'm doing my best, and I have read and enjoyed this classic before.

During July I continued reading:

The Girl With the Louding Voice by Abi Dare - Adunni is a young Nigerian girl who wants an education more than anything. She has little control though, as her father gives her as a bride to an old man, then a tragedy forces her to flee her village, and she winds up in Lagos with nothing more than a sliver of hope that things will get better.

The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa - A stray cat finds a home with a young man and travels with him to visit his longtime friends. A bittersweet memoir told mostly from the cat's point of view.

 During July I shelved:

Church With No Walls by Noah Cleveland - I keep working on this and then needing to set it aside, and I feel like I'd better set it aside and try again in a couple weeks. It's not a tough read, but I want to give the challenges in it the attention they deserve.

Coming Up in August!

Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson
Claiming Mariah by Pam Hillman
When Silence Sings by Sarah Loudin Thomas

On my blogs recently . . .

Besides the reviews, here on Just A Second you'll find:

And on my homeschool blog, Homeschool Coffee Break:

What I'm Highlighting . . . With the growing number of families considering or making the change to homeschooling, I've been trying to provide some guidance and lists of resources on my homeschool blog. If you happen to be one of those new homeschoolers, or know someone who is, please check out some of my resources and feel free to share. I'm happy to help too - just drop me a line and let me know! Start here: Suddenly Homeschooling - How To Get Started

And my friends that read Just A Second are invited to join me at Homeschool Coffee Break for the Twenty-Six Lists link-up. It's every other week and the list prompts are for everyone, not just homeschoolers. The current list is Summer Menu Favorites, and next week the new list will be about Family Traditions.

  4. Jane Eyre is one of my favorites. I hope you are enjoying The Travelling Cat Chronicles. I wasn't sure at first, but ended up loving it in the end. The Girl With the Louding Voice sounds really interesting. I'll have to check it out. Just Mercy is on my TBR shelf. I'm looking forward to reading it. Hopefully sometime this fall.

I hope you have a great week!
