Decluttering at the Speed of Life by Dana K White - Speaking of the "speed of life" . . . I finished this book at least a month ago, and it was the first book I'd finished reading in a couple of months, and it's taken me this long to write up a little review. Goodness. Therefore I will keep it short!
Author Dana White has battled the out of control clutter in her own home and overcame it, and she says she is still a work in progress, so she comes at the subject with personal understanding and sympathy. I've read some guides on how to get organized and keep up with housekeeping written by organizing gurus who seem to be naturally in the more minimalist mindset and it doesn't feel like they truly understand what it's like for those that are attached to their things or who really don't know where to begin with reducing and sorting the clutter they've collected. However, though she understands personally, she doesn't pull any punches with her advice. It will take work and a change of attitude to get control of your space again. Her methods are simple and direct. Start where you are and start with the easy decisions, and go from there. One of the most important mindsets she shares is that we all must find a way to live comfortably within the size of our containers. A drawer, a closet, a room, a house . . . they are containers with a finit amount of space available. If you have more t-shirts that fit in the drawer that is their container, you need to get rid of the t-shirts that don't fit. Period. The advice all builds on this very simple strategy, and all is completely practical.
For myself, I certainly do have more items than I need in quite a few categories, and my problem is often what to do with the items I want to get rid of or how to decide what is worth keeping and what isn't. So while I found the information and instructions in the book helpful and encouraging, it wasn't exactly new or groundbreaking in my life. More of a kick in the pants to remind me to stay ahead of my own tendency to collect clutter and not to allow clutter to take over. Very useful reminder as I decide where things belong in my new house . . . or should I say, my new container.
Would recommend to anyone wanting to tame their own clutter problems big or small, because of its practicality and the very real mindset shifts that she talks about.
