Scripture and a Snapshot: August 31, 2014

But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
"The Lord is my portion," says my soul,
"therefore I will hope in him."
The Lord is good to those who wait for him,
to the soul who seeks him.

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch #154

Everyday Ruralty
I always feel like I'm a little late for the weekly Chat on the Farmhouse Porch hosted by Everyday Ruralty. But I don't think I am. Let me just refill my coffee and then I'll answer the questions that Patrice has put to us this week.

This week's questions:

  1. Please tell me something you have done recently that was really fun.
  2. Do you worry about any issues regarding food/food quality/food production?
  3. Have you painted any of your walls with colors other than white, beige, or tan?
  4. What is your favorite way to have a hamburger?
  5. Please finish this sentence. If I could, I'd like to play __________________________. (This could be a musical instrument, a part in a play - use your imagination.)
My answers:
  1. Well, there hasn't been anything "big" lately, but I have a lot of fun doing everyday things. Things like going out for coffee with friends, going to music practice, even hanging out with the other moms and homeschool meetings. I'm looking forward to doing some fun things next week while on vacation!
  2. I don't really worry about it, but I am paying more attention to how many additives are in the food. I'm trying to do more baking and 'from scratch' cooking, but I'm not exactly the crunchy-granola type and I don't like cooking that much, so that's a challenge.
  3. Any walls I've painted are something other than white, beige, or tan! Some of the rooms here we haven't painted (yet!!) and those are the ones that are still bland off-white. In my living room, there's wallpaper and a dark green wall. My kitchen and dining room have red/tan checkerboard wallpaper. My bathroom is bright green with a darker green sponged pattern. The upstairs bathroom is turquoise. My daughter's room is sage green, and my sons' room is a medium blue. The family room is the room we're working on painting - it's a light green. We also tried out a deep golden yellow in the stairwell, and liked it so that is probably what I'll put in the hallways and entry as well, and maybe even in the dining room someday.
  4. I love burgers cooked on the grill, well-done, and with bacon and cheese. Sometimes I put just barbecue sauce on, but most of the time I put on mayo, ketchup, and mustard.
  5. If I could, I'd like to play guitar! I learned to play when I was a teenager, but have rarely picked up a guitar since, so I've forgotten most of it.

Recent Reads: Michal

Michal (The Wives of King David #1) by Jill Eileen Smith - Now here is a Biblical character whose story hasn't been told in a historical novel form before. At least not that I'm aware of. After all, it doesn't seem like there's a happy ending possible when we read about her in the Old Testament. However, Smith does a good job of giving Michal a personality, background, and motivations to help us come up with plausible explanations for her actions and attitudes.

We know that Michal is the younger daughter of King Saul, and the Bible tells us a few things about her. She loved David, and he was pleased about it. She was given as a bride to David, and at least once helped him escape when her father was trying to kill him. Later, while David was on the run from Saul, she was given to someone else as a bride. After Saul's death, David demanded that Michal be returned to him. And the last thing we're told is that Michal despised and criticized David for his dancing in celebration of the return of the Ark to Jerusalem, and this story is followed by the statement that she was childless until her death.

I have often wondered how Michal went from loving David and lying to her father, the king, to save him; to despising him in her heart. Smith offers up a storyline that connects those dots. While this book imagines all the background details, it doesn't contradict the Scripture, and I found it to be very helpful as far as following the timeline of events and giving context to the historical setting. In my own reading of the accounts in the Bible, I didn't fully appreciate the amount of time between Michal's marriage to David and her returning to him after he became king. I also didn't realize how long she had been living as wife to Paltiel after David's escape from Saul. However much she loved David at the beginning of her story, and whatever she felt about her marriage to Paltiel, Scripture is clear that Paltiel was devastated at losing her because he followed the entourage weeping. She was apparently married to Paltiel for something like seventeen years, during which time David took several other wives and Michal's own father and brothers were killed, so it's quite reasonable to think that her attitude towards David was radically changed!

Overall, I enjoyed the book and the insights into what life may have been like for Michal and David and the other characters involved in their stories. The ending is definitely bittersweet, because it doesn't soften the blow of barrenness and loneliness, but it leaves room for Michal to repent and reconcile. There are at least two other novels in Smith's "The Wives of King David" series, and I am hoping to read those as well.

Teaser Tuesdays: August 26, 2014

TeaserTuesdays3

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. To play along, just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page
  • Be careful not to include spoilers!
  • Share the title and author, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR lists if they like your teasers!
My teaser is from a Georgette Heyer book, and it actually did make me laugh out loud! In this scene, a snobby gentleman's valet has just criticized the fact that Captain John Staples is about to set out on a short journey with very little luggage, and without a servant. The Captain's loyal valet takes offense and shoots back with a barb of his own:

"If the Captain was a tallow-faced twiddle-poop, mounted on a pair o' cat-sticks, I dessay he'd need a snirp like you to pad his calves out, and finify him," he said. "Only he ain't! Would there be anything more you was wishful to say about the Captain?"

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch #153

Everyday Ruralty
I think I have time this morning for a quick weekly Chat on the Farmhouse Porch hosted by Everyday Ruralty

This week's questions:
  1. What are you most looking forward in the remaining months of 2014?
  2. Tell us about the last movie you saw, or book you read.
  3. Do you ever make smoothies or juice?
  4. Who do you wish you could talk to right now?
  5. Please finish this sentence. "If I could spend a week in a lovely cabin in the mountains I would like to_______________________."
My answers:
  1. I'm looking forward to a couple of vacations we still have planned, and I'm really looking forward to having my parents visit us during the Christmas season!
  2. I can't remember what movie I saw last. I haven't seen one in a theater in ages, but I've watched bits and pieces of all kinds of movies on DVD recently - mostly The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings movies. The last book I finished was Loyal In Love and it was okay. It's a novelized biography of Queen Henrietta Maria of England. Right now I'm reading The Eight by Katherine Neville - it is one of my very favorite books.
  3. Nope. My kids make milkshakes though.
  4. There's a number of friends I'd like to talk to in person rather than just on Facebook, but it's a bit of a hike to go out for coffee with any of them.
  5. If I could spend a week in a lovely cabin in the mountains, I would like to relax with some good books, and with my family and some board games. We did a vacation like that a couple years ago, and are hoping to do something very similar again this year.

I was in trouble. Big trouble.
It began that New Year's Eve, the last day of 1972. I had a date with a fortune-teller. But like that fellow with the appointment in Samarrah, I'd tried to flee my own fate by avoiding it.

Scripture and a Snapshot: August 16, 2014

There is none like you, O Lord;
you are great, and your name is great in might.

It is he who made the earth by his power,
who established the world by his wisdom,
and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.
When he utters his voice,
there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth.
He makes lightning for the rain,
and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses.

Recent Reads - Loyal In Love

Loyal in Love: Henrietta Maria, Wife of Charles I (Queens of England, #1)
Loyal In Love by Jean Plaidy - I have read a number of Jean Plaidy's biographical novels, and the historical novels she has written under other names, and generally I enjoy them. This story in the Queens of England series was interesting, but not a favorite of mine. It is the story of Henrietta Maria, the French Princess married to Charles I of England. As usual, Plaidy delivers a novelization of history that is rich in detail and background, and highlights the personalities of historical figures. However, in this case I didn't find Henrietta Maria to be very likable, so I often found myself rather unsympathetic to her in a tale told from her point of view.

Henrietta was self-centered and short-sighted, and for most of her life cared only for her opinions and desires. She was staunchly Catholic, having been raised in France, and part of the purpose in marrying her to Charles of England was the hope that she would be able to turn the Stuarts and England itself back to Catholicism. In her loyalty to her religion, she offended many in England by refusing to be crowned as Queen (because it was a Protestant ceremony), and stubbornly quarreled often with the nobility and even with Charles I over religious matters. She was fiercely loyal to Charles, however, and they were devoted to one another and to their children. When Oliver Cromwell's Puritans came into control of the Parliament and clashed with Charles, Henrietta worked tirelessly to help Charles hold his throne, even traveling to Holland to request support from the Prince of Orange. Later, after Charles I had been captured and executed by the Roundhead Parliament, Henrietta turned her scheming to try and help her son Charles regain the throne.

Henrietta never gave up her hope that her son Charles would win back his throne, but she also sparred with each of her children over religion, refusing to see one of her sons because he would not convert to Catholicism. She felt that she was always working for the good of her children, but as I was reading, I felt that she was meddlesome and judgmental, imposing her own opinions and preferences on all those around her. Although I didn't really like Henrietta very much, I did enjoy reading her story and learning a bit more about her side of the story during this tumultuous period of England's history.

The "Summer's Flying By" Reading Challenge - Update and Mini-Challenge #3

Time for an update on The "Summer's Flying By" Reading Challenge! I took on Mini-Challenge #1, and here is the update on the titles I'm reading for that.

S-U-M-M-E-R

S - (A) Stand At Sinai by Hope Auer
U - Understanding the Times by Ken Ham (finished!)
M - Michal by Jill Eileen Smith
M -
E - (The) Eight by Katherine Neville
R -

I decided to skip Mini-Challenge #2. I can't remember why. Probably just because it took me a week to get Mini-Challenge #1 posted with my kick-off post! Here is Mini-Challenge #3.
mini3
Read a book with your birth month in the title, or read books that start with each letter of your birth month. My birth month is December, and it seems that most of the books with December in the title are Christmas themed. Or they are about Pearl Harbor, which I'm not sure I want to read about any more. I did remember the book Fireflies in December, which I put on a to-read-someday list awhile ago, so I might grab that. My daughter's birthday is in July - maybe we could try that. More summery, and fewer letters if we go that route!

Not included in the Mini-Challenges are these books that I am reading:
Loyal In Love by Jean Plaidy and Deep & Wide by Andy Stanley

There is nothing more luxurious than eating while you read; unless it be reading while you eat. Amabel did both: they are not the same thing, as you will see if you think the matter over. ~E. Nesbit

What summery books are you reading? Please take "just a second" to leave a comment and let me know.
There's still time to join the challenge - just visit The "Summer's Flying By" Reading Challenge Kick-off Post at Simply Audra Marie.

Recent Reads - Understanding the Times

Understanding the Times
Understanding the Times by Ken Ham - This book was free for Kindle a while back and I thought it was worth picking up. Turns out it was a very quick read, and much of the material in the book is what Mr Ham presented when I last heard him speak - at the Teach Them Diligently conference in Washington DC. Although I immediately recognized the content as something I'd already heard (and could still remember exactly how he said it - delightful Australian accent and all!), it was not just a rehash. I loved having all of the Scripture references and the explanations included, because I couldn't take notes that efficiently! Plus there are many points and items that I had not heard or read before. Ham presents a heartfelt call to the church to stand firm on the authority of God's Word, and gives compelling and logical reasons that we can and must do so with confidence. A recommended read for parents, Sunday School teachers, and church leaders.

The shots were coming faster and one came so near that when it buried itself in the ground the soil came up and was spattered over our clothes and faces. I was hurried through the village to the ditch which surrounded it and Henry made us all lie in this so that the shots could whistle over our heads and where, apart from a direct hit, we could be safe.
